Lakes in Africa are unique in terms of size, depth and location. The major lakes are found along the continental fault line known as the East African Rift Valley which runs along the south-eastern part of the continent. Lake Victoria is the world’s second-largest freshwater lake. The place around the lake is densely populated. Lake Tanganyika is considered the second-oldest lake in the world. It is the largest and deepest lake in the Rift Valley. The areas around Lake Nyasa or Lake Malawi have been developed to encourage tourism. The water is safe for snorkelling, sailing, water skiing, kayaking and scuba-diving. Lake Kariba has a thriving fishing industry and tourist-friendly areas where one can go fishing, boating, and water-sports. Lake Chad though the largest lake in Northern Africa area-wise is really shallow. Lake Albert is sparsely populated but it is surrounded by forest preserves and the popular Murchison Falls National Park.
