Air pollution is not just an essay topic for a 2nd grader anymore but one of the deadliest killers in India today. It is the seventh biggest cause of illness and the fifth biggest cause of death toll according to the Global Burden of Disease report, released in 2013.
My solution is to run to the hills! But sadly enough even hills are also not spared from the rage of air pollution with Shimla being one of the most polluted hill stations in India.

1. Mawlynnong- The Cleanest Village in Asia
Around 90 km from Shillong, Mawlynnong is a small village in Meghalaya that was awarded the prestigious tag of ‘The Cleanest Village in Asia’ by the Discover India Magazine in the year 2003. The villagers are very particular about keeping the village clean and you can’t find a single cigarette butt or a plastic bag lying around. Take the skywalk in the village and breathe in some fresh air as you explore the village.

2. Matheran- No Cars Allowed
Nestling in the Western Ghats, Matheran is a beautiful hill station in Maharashtra. The most amazing part about the hill town is that you’re required to pay an entry fee (INR 50 for adults and INR 25 for kids) to enter its limits, the proceeds of which goes into the up keeping of its environment . Besides, no vehicles are allowed into the limits of the town, which further guarantees the cleanliness of the air at this charming place.

3. Gavi in Pathanamthitta- Ecotourism at Its Best
One of the most beautiful places in Kerala for eco-tourism, Gavi is located in the Pathanamthitta district that was one of the two cities to cross the benchmark of sustaining cleanest air in India by Central Pollution Control Board. The village is surrounded in evergreen forests with plush flora and fauna. It is also an amazing spot for bird watching and trekking.

4. Malappuram- Hygiene Comes First!
Malappuram is another city in Kerala to have met the benchmark of sustaining clean air according to the Central Pollution Control Board. The state government has also recognised the municipality of the city to maintain an amazing track record to keep the city clean and healthy. Khonoma is an Angami Naga village in Nagaland that boasts of rare biodiversity and rich forests. The village also has a legendary past and for all these reasons various government agencies has recently taken interest in developing eco-tourism of this quaint little village. Words can barely express the beauty and the magical experience of the village can offer.

6. Chandigarh- The Cleanest City in India
