How to reach trekking spots in Ladakh

All the trek trails start after Leh in Ladakh. Reach Leh through the airways or railways and then take a taxi or bus to reach your trek starting spot. The popular trek trails of Ladakh are frozen river trek, Snow Leopard trek, Markha Valley trek, Stok Kangri trek, Lamayuru Alchi trek, Nubra Valley trek, Sham Valley trek.

Frozen river trek is also known as the ‘Chadar Trek’ in which people trace across the frozen Zanskar River. This trek tests the mental stability of the trekker. People who can handle the high winter climatic condition can go on this trek. This trek is very expensive in comparison to the others as you require heavy woolen clothes, gumboots to keep yourself warm and extra fuel is needed for cooking.

Snow Leopard trek involves exploring around Hemis National Park, which is 600 Sq. Kms. in area, located at the eastern part of Ladakh. It is very popular among trekkers as you can spot rare species such as snow leopard, Ibex, Tibetan antelope, blue sheep and Golden Eagle. Spotting the snow leopard along with other animals is a once in a lifetime experience.

Markha Valley trek also known as the “Tea House Trek” which involves fascinating views of Zanskar and Ladakh mountain ranges. It involves residing in the parachute tents at villages that fall on the way to Markha Valley. You can also spot a blue sheep or the ibex on the way to the trek.

Stok Kangri trek is an ultimate test to physical stamina and mental strength of the trekker. This trek is recommended for only experienced trekkers who can tackle harsh weather condition. Walking 10 to 15 Kms. on the Himalayan and Ladakh ranges gives you an exciting experience.

Lamayuru Alchi trek is an easy trek starting from the oldest Lamayuru Monastery and ends at Alchi by crossing through the 4 passes in Ladakh namely Pritikingir La, Panji La, Kongske La and Stakspi La.

In Nubra valley trek, you can come across the Diskit & Samstanling monasteries, Bactrian camel rides in the white sand dunes of Hunder village. This high altitude trek requires more physical strength and stamina.

Sham valley trek is suitable for all age groups as it is an easy trek. Tracing the path across the routes such as Temisgang, Likir, Ridzong, Alchi, Phyang, Hemis Spituk and Lamayuru with serene views of villages and spectacular home stays adds attraction to this trek.

How long would it take to get acclimatized in Ladakh?

The time taken for acclimatization differs from person to person. Usually oen must rest for one whole day even if you are feeling ok. Avoid alcohol for a minimum of 3 days, and increase your intake of water. The biggest cause of Acute Mountain Sickness is dehydration.

What is the best season for trekking in Ladakh?

Depends on the trek route and weather conditions. While Chadar trek can be done only in January, treks like Markha Valley and Stok Kangri summit expedition are best done in summer months, June through September.
