How to Reach Banana Reef

Situated in the North Male Atoll, Banana Reef comprises of a protected marine area full of dramatic cliffs, breathtaking coral growths, fascinating caves and overhangs, along with some big predators like barracuda, sharks etc. It is also the first internationally recognized reef of the nation. This reef is exclusively popular for the snorkelling practices.

Being situated in one of the most developed atolls of Maldives in terms of hotels and resorts, Banana reef is quite easy to reach. Formed like a banana, this natural reef extends from the Northeast to Southern region covering an area of approximately 300 meters. The nearby resort islands present in the Maldives include Kurumba island, Club MED island and Fullmoon island which is equally popular world-over.

Since the time the North Male Atoll has attracted a scuba diver (which was nearly twenty years from now), Banana Reef has gained a different status. It is highly coveted as an ideal spot for adventure lovers. Another most prosperous feature about this island is its fishes. The fishes present here, have absolutely no fear of the photographers, so one can easily capture some excellent shots of the Banana Reef. Although, it becomes important to be a bit conscious during the strong water currents. As sometimes, it gets really tough to hold the control over the boat when strong current lashes the delicate reef. Banana reef is full of fantastic hotels, inn and resorts, so accommodation is not a big concern. One can find some great holiday packages in very budget.

The answer of how to reach Banana Reef is quite simple. First, one needs to take a flight to reach Male International Airport. To take the journey further, boats, seaplanes and private yachts are the options to reach Male North Atoll. The boat service here is equivalent to a car, whereas sea planes and yachts are more likely to be used by the tourists. Private transfers are mostly expensive. It is important to note that air taxis and boats are not operating at night, therefore, it is always advisable to plan the travel to avoid reaching there around darkness. Public ferries and cargo boats are other options available for budget conscious and independent-minded travelers.
