About Thamel in Kathmandu

Thamel is the hotspot for tourists in Kathmandu. Thamel neighbourhood first became popular during the 1970-80s when hippie culture took over Kathmandu. Unconventional travellers, living out of their backpacks came in the Nepalese capital in hordes, and they all made Thamel their resident hub while in the city. Over the decades, Thamel Kathmandu turned into a bustling centre for shopping, eating or simply strolling around. In 2017, Thamel was declared as a vehicle-free area to get rid of the honking and make the place a safer one for pedestrians. There are around 5-6 main streets in Thamel Nepal, and dozens of other veins and arteries stretching out in different directions. In these streets, one can expect to find literally anything and everything under the roof.

Shopping:

Thamel bazaar is by far the busiest place in Kathmandu on any given day (or night). From exotic bakeries and confectioners to trekking gears, from small curio and handicraft shops to garment and bookstores, from travel agencies to bars and restaurants of all types – shopping in Thamel is nothing short of a small event in itself. Bookstores are a big thing in Thamel. Paradise Bookshop is a vintage one, which trades old books for new ones and has a good collection. For shopping trekking equipment, one can visit North Face Store or the Tibetan-owned Sonam Trekking Store.

Nightlife:

Thamel nightlife is something to look forward to the most in Kathmandu. After the day’s sightseeing and afternoon’s shopping sessions are over, the tourists in Kathmandu head towards the various bars, clubs and casinos in Thamel. Rum Doodle is an iconic place that has been visited by every Everest climber ever, starting with Edmund Hillary himself. It is like visiting a shrine for the Mountaineers. Sam’s Bar is another favourite. Funky Buddha and Tome and Jerry’s are great choices too for live music.

Another thing to do in Thamel is natural therapy. There are multiple Thamel massage parlours, spas and salons which cater to tourists for a quick foot massage or a complete back massage to fight jet-lags.

    Hotel was average not so clean. Vehicle sent was too bad in condition. They have sent another vehicle next day that's spacious but suspension condition is very bad Driver is generally good but very poor in planning and maintaining timelines to cover the places. Lot of time wastedriver doesn't know
    the route properly so we couldn't see all places plus wasted time a lot. Travel agent was very helpful especially in providing information correctly. Travel agent collected extra amount for the last day because he said itenary says to drop us after checkout from hotel. But I didn't see any where it's mentioned.he shouldn't have asked for it extra. He promised that he will suggest places to shop and I form driver about the same but nothing happened..we have to search online and visit. Places

    We travelled to Nepal on a 9 days (8 nights) tour in March 2024. We were two couples and our itinerary covered Kathmandu, Chitwan National Park, Pokhara & Nagarkot. The tour was organised by M/s Kabru Adventure Holidays, Kathmandu, through Travel Triangle. A single vehicle (Toyota Hiace) picked us u
    p from Kathmandu airport and remained with us for the entire tour, finally dropping us off at Kathmandu airport on 9th day. The trip was well planned and we got very good hotels throughout the entire trip. Rain greeted us at Pokhara, and it did play spoilsport for a day. Despite that, we did manage to squeeze in a little bit of local sightseeing there. A birthday surprise with cake was arranged for my wife at the hotel in Souraha which was very well received by our entire group. Mr Amit Dhami of Kabru Adventure planned and conducted day-to-day coordination with us during the entire trip. Special thanks to him.
