How to Reach Yumthang Valley

There is no direct way to reach Yumthang Valley. One has to first go to Gangtok and get a permit to visit Yumthang. Due to its proximity with the Indo-China border, getting a permit is compulsory before one can visit the enchanted valley.

         By Air: One can book a flight to Bagdogra. Gangtok is 124 kilometers from Bagdogra Airport and it takes around 4 hours to reach. Taxis are available to reach Gangtok from Bagdogra airport. The taxi costs around INR 2000.

         By Rail: If travelling by train, the nearest railway station is New Jalpaiguri, West Bengal. All major trains going towards Guwahati pass through New Jalpaiguri. Gangtok is located at around 148 kilometers from New Jalpaiguri by road. The road connectivity from New Jalpaiguri to Gangtok is good with buses as well as taxis available for the tourists to choose from.

        By Road: The town of Lachung is well connected by road and is at around 113 kilometers from Gangtok. Road transport facilities area available from Lachung to Yumthang Valley.

It is always mandatory to book your trip through a travel agency in Gangtok and finish the formalities to receive the Permit for the same. Each tourist is required to fill a form, submit two passport sized photographs, and a Xerox copy of their Voter ID or other equivalent identity proof. Various kinds of packages are available for the tourists depending on their period of stay, and whether they want to share a ride or book a car just for themselves. Accommodation is only available in Lachung and not in Yumthang Valley and one has to travel back and forth from Lachung to the valley. The beautiful flowers of the valley and the serene slopes will always act as an inspiration and the travel will seem worthwhile. Yumthang Valley will always have an imprint on one’s memory.
