About Attidiya Bird Sanctuary in Colombo

Harboring wildlife and vegetation to the brim, Attidiya Bird Sanctuary is a sanctuary in the outskirts of Colombo. This is probably because it is located so close to the city. But in reality, Attidiya Bird Sanctuary is home to over 166 different species of birds, nearly 71 species of beautiful butterflies, 44 species of fish, reptiles, and even marshlands. The surprise that people feel when they walk into this sanctuary is genuine and warranted. This makes a trip to Attidiya Bird Sanctuary a memorable one engulfed in not just adventure, but a certain amount of peace and tranquility. Truly one of Colombo’s finest tourist places.

Attidiya Bird Sanctuary is even said to be home to crocodiles, vipers, cobras, and even pythons. Experience the wild side of Colombo immersed in the best wildlife experience at Attidiya Bird Sanctuary. Journey in to the marshes, starting at the Wildlife office on Kahawita Mawatha. There are two such offices – one on the east side of Bolgoda canal, and another on the west side. The eastern office lies in front of a Bodhi temple and is open daily. There is a wild experience and adventure just waiting for tourists to discover at Attidiya Bird Sanctuary.

In the months of December and January, one can find Attidiya Bird Sanctuary teeming with migratory birds of all kinds. Some of the rarer species of birds include Indian Shag, Wide Winged Purple Heron, Blue Breasted Banded Tail, Ruddy Crake, Spot Billed Pelican, Purple Coot, White Ibis, Painted Stork, and Glossy Ibis. This besides, Attidiya Bird Sanctuary is also known to house fishing cats, jackals, and quite a few other species of mammals. The sanctuary itself contains several trails that lend a genuine safari feeling to it. The trail along Bolgoda canal is worth taking. Possibly one of the best places in Sri Lanka for wildlife photography, there is no wonder why this sanctuary is such a tourist hotspot.
