Wondering what to do in Tamil Nadu on a family vacation or on a honeymoon? From boating in Kodaikanal to temple hopping in Madurai, read our detailed guide to popular things to do in Tamil Nadu to make your trip memorable.
Dravidian temples illustrate Tamil Nadu’s history in the same way Rajput forts characterize Rajasthan. Believe it or not, temple hopping is perhaps the most exhausting things to do in Tamil Nadu. Carved out of a rock or facing a lovely beach, temples in Tamil Nadu are ubiquitous. Meenakshi Amman Temple, Brihadeeswarar Temple, Mahabalipuram Shore Temple, and Rameshwaram are some of the famous temples in Tamil Nadu worth visiting.
Taking safaris in Anna Zoological Park, enjoying evening walk at Marina Beach, water sports in Muttukadu, spotting animals in Guindy Park, catching a dance performance at Kalakshetra are popular things to do in Chennai. Sauntering around the boulevards of the scenic French Quarter, exploring the "Grand Canal", and shopping for Indian craftsmanship are top things to do in Pondicherry.
Boating in Ooty Lake, walking in Ooty Botanical Gardens, trekking to Doddabetta Peak, taking a ride on Nilgiri Mountain Railway, and visiting Tea Factory are popular things to do in Ooty or Udhagamandalam. A short ride away from Salem, the hill station of Yercaud is a renowned tourist hub for coffee plantations, sightseeing tours, botanical gardens, and lush green hills. Just as rewarding as Ooty but more affordable, Yercaud is considered one of the best places for trekking in Tamil Nadu. Coonoor, the second largest hill station in the Nilgiri Hills, is another ideal base for trekking expeditions. Bird watching, trekking, walking through tea estates, and taking toy train rides are famous things to do in Coonoor on a holiday. Cycling around Kodai Lake, horse riding, shopping, and boating are popular things to do in Kodaikanal.
Visiting Courtallam Falls, Catherine Falls, Hogenakkal Waterfalls, and Tirparappu Waterfalls is one of the best things to do in Tamil Nadu in monsoon season. Travellers can hit the coastline of Tamil Nadu to find respite during summer months. Marina Beach, Elliot Beach, Mahabalipuram Beach, Kanniyakumari Beach, and Promenade Beach are some of the best beaches in Tamil Nadu along the Coromandel Coast.
When it comes to adrenaline-pumping activities, hill stations of Tamil Nadu offer most of the adventure thrills. Trekking in Western Ghats is as delightful as a stroll in a tea estate. Camping at Yelagiri Adventure Camp, picnicking at Jalagamparai Falls, and bowing before Lord Murugan at Velavan Temple are popular things to do in Yelagiri. Paragliding, zorbing, and rock climbing are other adventure activities to do in Yelagiri.
Mudumalai National Park is arguably the most popular places to observe wildlife in Tamil Nadu. The park is home to Bengal tigers, Indian leopards, sloth bears, gaur, deer, langurs, and Indian elephants. Vedanthangal Bird Sanctuary in Kancheepuram is home to about 40,000 birds including migratory species that come here in winter. Taking a safari ride to spot tigers in Anamalai Tiger Reserve near Coimbatore is another one of the top things to do in Tamil Nadu.

I got in touch with traveltriangle and gosthala when I was planning a 7 day trip of Tamil Nadu starting from Mahabalipuram to Madurai covering 4 coastal cities. When I started having detail discussion with them they made me realize that how far the distances would be and how we can break the journey and cover more cities. They comfortably planned the itenary and setup a 7 city tour in 8 days which was remarkable. The driver who was allocated to us was good, but I wish that he could speak either Hindi or English fluently as it became difficult for us t...

Our trip to Tamilnadu through Gosthala went very well. It was all well planned and smooth. Thanks to Harini who has been coordinating the trip and was reachable all along the trip. Driver Sankar was very helpful and he kept the vehicle clean. We had a peaceful darshan and sight seeing. Accommodation was all good except Gopi Nivas Grand hotel in KanyaKumari. It was stinking with cigarette smell and bath rooms were not clean. Apart from this hotel all other hotels were good. We didn't expect Gopi Nivas Grand to be so bad.

We have great experience with Gosthala's service. It was very good time and we enjoyed a lot. At Kovalam, hotel stay with complimentary breakfast service, restaurant staff should be cooperative and provide proper service. Kovalam hotel location is very good but still hotel management needs more attention for hospitality and service. So travellers can refer more people to stay.
