Shantiniketan popularly termed as 'Abode of Peace' still seems to be reverberating with the fond memories of Nobel Laureate Rabindranath Tagore. It is situatednear Bolpur in the Birbhum district of West Bengal. The world renowned Vishwa Bharti University is located here. The distinguishing feature is that both east and west neet here together for World Peace and it attracts students from far and wide. It is touted as a spiritual centre in a serene and tranquill environment. The father of Rabindranath Tagore Maharishi Debendranath Tagore established Santiniketan in 1862 AD. A trust was formed to run Shantiniketan which was endowedwith the responsibility of arranging a fair called Paush Mela with the primary objective of propagating Brahmo Dharma. Rabindranath Tagore had set up a Brahmacharya School in 1901 now known as Patha Bhawan. Owing to the fame and respect attained by \rabindranath Tagore, Shantiniketan has emerged as a popular tourist spot.

Bolpur which is 2 km away from Shantiniketan is the nearest rail head. Kolkatta which is 210 km distant from Shantiniketan is the nearest aerodrome. Shantiniketan is connected to neighbouring cities by bus.
ATTRACTIONS IN SHANTINIKETAN:
Cheena Bhawan is the study centre for China primarily aimed at ensuring peace and harmony between the neighbouring countries and for strengtheningtheir bond. It offers research facility on Chinese culture and attracts many Chinese scholars.
Chhatimtala is the place of meditation of the father of Rabindranath Tagore and is a famous tourist attraction. The students who graduate fromVishwa Bharati University are granted a branch of Saptapami tree. A prayer hall of Maharishi Debendranath Tagore attracts many visitors here.
Hindi Bhavana is meant to corroborate the importance of Hindi in Indian society. Those who are fond of literature, poems, stories and novelsthrong this centre.
Nippon Bhavana meant to strengthen Indo-Japanese relations is located in Shantiniketan. It has a rich library of Japanese books. One is bound tocome across Japanese culture, literature and artistic works.
Tagore memorial museum is established at Shantiniketan in 1942 and exhibits personal memorablia of Rabindranath Tagore and also the gifts presentedt him from India and abroad. A library and general collection with beautiful paintings , letters written by celebrities and manuscripts are enclosedin this centre. Uttarayan Complex is the place where Rabindranath Tagore lived for a lifetime. This complex contains many buildings in unique architectural style. A prayer hall built by Maharishi Debendranath Tagore is where Brahmo prayers are held. There is an art gallery and museum in this complex which sports the Nobel Prize medal, a bangle and watch of the poet.
