About Pondicherry

Places To See


Auroville
Located at a distance of about 14 kms from Pondicherry, Auroville is a self-sustaining microcosm of humanity that comes here to achieve nirvana. Established in 1966, with the backing of the government of India, Auroville is today a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Established as an experimental town, and based on Mother’s Vision, the town is a melting pot of various cultures and a kaleidoscope of art and culture.

Arikamedhu
A must visit for the history buffs, Arikamedhu reveals the ancient history of Pondicherry. Several excavations carried out over the period, bring alive the Indo-Roman era. Arikamedhu was once the bustling trade center of the Indo-Roman period. On display are remnants of Roman trade including wine jars and ancient Roman coins.

French War Memorial
The war memorial commemorates the memory of soldiers who lost their lives in the First World War. Boasting a simple yet impressive architecture, the memorial is beautifully lit on 14th July every year, when the annual commemoration is celebrated. The well-manicured lawns add to the serenity of the surroundings and the majesty of the place.

Jawahar Toy Museum
This neatly maintained doll museum presents the perfect venue for an educative yet entertaining family day out. The museum is located in Pondicherry town at the old Light House building close to Gandhi Maidan. On display are a colourful variety of dolls properly labeled and beautifully dressed in their traditional attires.

Pondicherry Museum
Located in Bharathi Park, the museum houses an interesting collection of sculptures. The main highlight of the museum is the gallery that displays the remains of archaeological findings from the Arikamedu Roman settlement.

Raj Niwas (Palais du Gouvernement)
This 18th century building today serves as the Raj Nivas - the residence of the Pondicherry's Lieutenant Governor. The building houses the old court and the legislative assembly.

Things To Do


Plage Paradiso (Paradise Beach)
If relaxing on a beach is your idea of fun, Plage Paradiso is the perfect place to enjoy the sun, sand and the cool breezes. The beach is located about 8 km from Pondicherry and is famous for its golden sands. There are a host of adventure activities available here. The beach can get crowded at times, however, if you are looking for some quiet moments, you can enjoy long, leisurely walks and commune with the tranquility of the surroundings.

Heritage Walk
Experience the best of Pondicherry through the heritage walk that takes you past most of Puducherry’s sights and attractions including the Place de la Republique, the Lighthouse, the French War Memorial, the statue of Joan of Arc, the Church of Our Lady of the Angels, the Pondicherry Museum and the Government Gardens.
Tip: The cost is Rs. 1, 000 for a group of 4-8. It is advisable to take advance appointment to arrange for the walk.

Nellithope Market
The market is where you can experience the true flavours of street shopping. You can shop for everything from clothes to spices to antiques. Don’t forget to put your bargaining skills to test and shop for great souvenirs.

SITA Cultural Center
The centre offers a whole range of activities for both tourists and locals. You can learn several dances including Bollywood and Barata Natyam as well as Ballet, Tango or Hip Hop. Besides, you can also participate in workshops such as Tanjavur painting workshops, Ayurvedic massages, reflexology and Mehendi.
Tip: The cultural centre is open from 9am-12am; and 2pm-7. 30pm

Scuba Diving
Diving trips take you to a diving expedition in the sea from Pondy Harbour. The diving Center, located in the center of town, offers one day experience for non-divers and swimmers. Besides, four days PADI courses are also offered to divers. Scuba diving in Pondicherry gives you the perfect opportunity to view the reefs, fish and other forms of marine life.

Botanical Garden and Aquarium | ["Zoo"]

Government Museum of Puducherry | ["Museum"]

The sculptures and remains of excavation are some of the findings from the Arikamedu Roman settlement. Also, arms, weapons, burial urns, glass beads have been taken from the Chola, Pallava, Vijaynagar and Nayaka periods. The museum is distinct and provides a rare and fascinating glimpse into the French culture resembling the one between the 17th -20th century. Stone sculptures, paintings, exquisitely carved furniture and other artefacts from the French chapter of Pondicherry’s history can be seen here. Recently, experts from La Rochelle and INTACH were roped in to renovate the museum. The exhibits are better lighted and ordered now, and very soon interactive multimedia facilities will be installed to make the visit more engaging.
