About One Pillar Pagoda in Hanoi

Located in Hanoi, the capital of Vietnam, One Pillar Pagoda is regarded to be one of the most significant temples of the country. The Pagoda is made out of wood on a single pillar of stone, which is 1.25 metre in diameter and 4 meters in height. Thus it got the name ‘one pillar’ pagoda. The design resembles a lotus blossom, which again, is a Buddhist symbol of purity. But it also has its roots in the One Pillar Pagoda history.

The temple was originally built by the Emperor Ly Thai Tong. Thus, One Pillar Pagoda architecture is featured with the Ly style of designs. The emperor Ly Thai Tong was the ruler between the years 1028 and 1054. The lack of a child and heir plagued Ly Thai Tong until one night in his dreams he met the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara. He handed him a baby son while sitting in his serene posture on a lotus flower. After this, the emperor married, and his wife bore him a son, in gratitude for which he constructed the One Pillar Pagoda temple in 1049.

The temple itself has been renovated many times, but the most recent occurrence was in 1955 during the evacuation of France. If one visits Vietnam, One Pillar Pagoda in Hanoi is a site that should not be missed out on; given that it remains one of the most revered and respected sites, and has a beautiful garden which is the perfect place to indulge in tranquil contemplation. There is a shrine located inside the pagoda which is to worship the Vietnamese Buddhist deity Quan Am.

One of the major attractions in the pagoda is the famous Bo tree. It grows behind the pagoda and is said to be the offshoot of the Banyan tree under which Buddha attained enlightened in Bodh Gaya. The tree was gifted to Vietnam by Government of India as an act of goodwill in 1958.

We took a package for 10 days. Our agent Jade from Namaste Vietnam was very helpful and gave all the necessary information timely. She also accommodated all our reasonable requests and went above and beyond to arrange a surprise birthday cake for me in the hotel. One thing that we did not like is
the guided tours because they are always in hurry and does not let us spend time in one place. We actually had to spend extra to get private transfer in the last guided tour to actually enjoy the place. Next time we will make sure not to include any guided tours in the trip. Having private transfers and then exploring the place on our own is the best option. However, that's upon us because we chose the guided tour in first place. Otherwise the trip was amazing. The cruise on Halong Bay was perfect.

Our interaction with Alice from Namaste Vietnam was exceptional. She exuded warmth, proactivity, and genuine kindness throughout our journey. Alice effectively coordinated and communicated all tour and guide details, even being available at midnight for any concerns that arose. Her personal touch w
as evident as she made sure to meet and greet us before our departure and offered suggestions for additional places to visit when we had free time. When we encountered a flight delay in our second city, Alice swiftly adjusted our plans, demonstrating remarkable flexibility and dedication to ensuring our trip ran smoothly. Regarding accommodations, all the hotels were ideally situated, allowing us to explore the cities easily on foot. Our travel itinerary, covering three cities starting with Hanoi, then Danang, and finally Ho Chi Minh City, was meticulously planned. Each destination offered unique experiences, from exploring Ha Long Bay to visiting pagodas and marble mountains in Danang, and finally, discovering the Cu Chi tunnels and Mekong Delta in Ho Chi Minh City. The tour guides in each location were exemplary, always punctual and ensuring there was never a dull moment during our excursions. In terms of constructive feedback, it's worth noting that Vietjet Airlines consistently experiences delays, which could impact travelers' plans and schedules. Additionally, while the Cu Chi tunnels were a fascinating visit, some travelers might consider Mekong Delta as optional, as it may not align with everyone's interests. Overall, our experience with Namaste Vietnam exceeded our expectations, thanks to Alice's outstanding service and the well-planned itinerary that allowed us to fully immerse ourselves in the beauty and culture of Vietnam. One of the most cherished aspects of our journey was the genuine warmth of the people we encountered. Immersing ourselves in their rich history provided profound insights and appreciation. We relished the culinary delights of vegan restaurants, while the breathtaking beauty of Ha Long Bay and the serene atmosphere of My Khe Beach left lasting impressions. Exploring pagodas offered moments of tranquility. strolling through vibrant night markets added an element of excitement. Thanks to the diverse eateries, our days were filled with delightful culinary experiences. Moreover, engaging with fellow travelers added an extra layer of joy to our adventure. Overall, the trip was a tapestry of unforgettable moments, blending cultural exploration, culinary delights, and meaningful connections with new acquaintances.
