Describing her experience in Bhutan to be a mix nature and culture, Alpana Gandhi elaborates on her journey to the neighbouring country. She booked her package from TravelTriangle for INR 116500 and it included her flights, transfers, hotels, and sightseeing.

I had always wanted to explore north-east India, especially the Himalayas and fortunately, I got to do both during my Honeymoon in Bhutan. With its rich landscape, towering mountains and peaceful ambience, we knew Bhutan would offer us the perfect background to spend time with each other.

I had booked my package from TravelTriangle which was referred to me by someone close. The quotes and itinerary provided by the travel agent – ‘Heat Flexi Holidays’ matched our requirements and so we finalised the deal with them. Our countdown for the trip had begun and we were earnestly waiting to experience the beautiful country.

Day 1: Le Meridian in Thimphu

Alpana and her husband in Le Meridian

We landed in Paro and were picked up by the cab driver who took us to our hotel ‘Le Meridian’ in Thimphu. The hotel staff was very warm and greeted us with great enthusiasm. We were also gifted free pastries and flowers since they knew it was our honeymoon. Our gala dinner in the evening was a fantastic affair and I was super impressed by the excellent hospitality endowed by the hotel. Bhutan had begun on a good note!

Day 2: Sightseeing in Thimphu

Alpana and her husband in a temple

Since I was not feeling well in the morning, we started our sightseeing in Thimphu by 1 PM. The first place we visited was the Buddha Point (Kuensel Phodrang). This place had the biggest Buddha Statue in the country which was simply majestic to look at. Next was a temple visit that was again marked by peaceful vibes and serene atmosphere.
Later, we went out for dinner in a local restaurant and retired for the night.

Day 3: Punakha

Kichu Resort in Punakha

After checking out from the hotel, we started for Punakha. We saw the ‘Dochula Pass’ on our way where we witnessed the snow-capped Himalayan mountains. It was a mesmerizing sight and I was lost in the serenity and majesty of the view. Next was the ‘Motithang Takin Preserve’ – home to many animals including the national one of Bhutan – ‘Takin’.

Alpana and her husband in Punakha

After reaching Punakha, we paid a visit to the fertility temple of Bhutan (Chimi Lhakhang) and it was a nice experience.
Our hotel in Punakha was called ‘Kichu Resort’ and this was a dimly lit property. Huge and dark, it had an eerie vibe to it and this was the first time that I felt a little scared during our travels. All of this coupled with the fact that we were the only people staying there made us really anxious.

Day 4: Sightseeing in Punakha

Sightseeing in Punakha Bhutan

Since we were given a small river facing room which although looked great during the daytime, we decided to shift to a bigger room nonetheless.
Our sightings for the day included a visit to the ‘Punakha Dzong’ (fortress) which offered us breathtaking views and an insight into the heritage of the country.
Punakha wasn’t such a great experience for the sightseeing wasn’t so great and also because we faced issues with the hotel.

Day 5: Paro

Snow capped mountains in Paro Bhutan

We set off for Paro this day and loved the scenery on the way. Our guide and driver were excellent and he kept us informed regarding all the points of interest. He even told us about the best places to get clicked. We visited a temple in Paro and later checked into our new hotel ‘Naksel’.

Day 6: Tiger’s Nest Trek (Paro Taktsang)

Tigers Nest Trek in Bhutan

We did the Tiger’s Nest Trek this day and it took us about 4-5 hours to reach the temple on the top. The view from the top was mind blowing and I loved the adventurous feel that the trek gave to us.

Day 7: Back to Mumbai

Alpana and her husband in Bhutan

This was our last day and after the breakfast, we checked out of the hotel and left for the Paro Airport. (flight back to Mumbai)

Bhutan was more of a spiritual experience than a romantic one. We had good memories here except for the ones in Punakha. I enjoyed spending time with my husband in the scenic background of snow-capped mountains, lush green landscapes and fresh cold air.

Scenery in Bhutan

High Points – Sightseeing in Thimphu and Paro, Le Meridian, and the Tiger’s Nest Trek.

Low Points – Kichu Resort in Thimphu was dimly lit and appeared really shady since we were the only occupants there. The room service was not up to the mark and we felt the hotel could have put in more effort to make us (honeymoon couple) feel special and comfortable. I wish the travel agent had given us proper info about Punakha for in my opinion we could have skipped the place for a better one.
I had specifically asked them not bring ‘Toyota Innova’ for transfers, but it was still provided on the first day. (It was changed later)

Tips for future travelers – Bhutan is a country perfect for all those looking for a peaceful, calm, and serene environment. Probably not a perfect place for honeymooners since there is nothing more to do than visiting temples and monuments.

Are you excited after reading this travelogue and want to explore Bhutan yourself? Then, do not wait for one more minute and gather your family or friends to organize your next vacation. To experience nature in a state of trance, plan your sojourn to Bhutan at this very hour.
