Bishan East is a subzone located in the Bishan planning area of Singapore, identified by the Urban Redevelopment Authority (URA). The boundaries of Bishan East are constituted by Ang Mo Kio Avenue 1 in the north; Braddell Road in the south; Bishan Road in the west; and the Central Expressway (CTE) in the east. The planning area Bishan, in general, is also called as Bishan New Town and Bishan Town. Earlier Bishan was a part of Kwong Wai Siew Peck San Theng, a cemetery that was meant for the Hakka and Cantonese communities of Singapore. In 1870, people started settling around this area after the cemetery was established.<\/p>\n

This led to the beginning of Kampong San Teng. Though later in 1942, during the Battle of Singapore, Peck San Theng became a site for a heavy firefight between the forces of Japan and Britain. This region was conquered by the Japanese forces, and it became a refuge for the people of Singapore. In 1973, the burial activities in this region were completely stopped and after 6 years the land was handed out for developmental activities by the government. Between 1982 and 1984 the land was cleared by exhuming the graves.<\/p>\n
