The Science Centre Singapore has more than 850 exhibits spread over 8 exhibition galleries. The Centre sees about a million visitors every year and the footfall had crossed over 25 million by their silver jubilee in 2003. The Science Centre Singapore was a part of the National Museum of Singapore which was later made to be a separate institution. This was done in order to allow the latter to center its focus solely on the artistic and historical collections.<\/p>\n

The Science Council of Singapore had first introduced this idea in 1969. The Government was searching for methods to encourage and promote scientific education in the country and to tap into the technology sector that was swiftly developing and advancing. So they approved the idea put forward by the Science Council of Singapore. The Science Centre Board organized a design competition inviting entries for architectural designs to finalize the building architecture of Science Centre Singapore. Among all the designs, the entry of Raymond Woo was selected, who was then commissioned as the architect for this grand project.<\/p>\n

Built in an area of 60,000 square meters (650,000 sq ft) site in Jurong East, the Science Council of Singapore S$12 million worth project. The Centre was made officially open to the public on 10 December 1977 by the then Minister-in-charge of the Science Centre Board, Dr. Toh Chin Chye. The center witnessed a further and significant expansion in 1987, when the first and only OMNIMAX theatre of Singapore, the Omni-Theatre was opened. Constructed at a cost of $18 million, this is a 276-seat theatre built under a tilted dome of 23 meters (75 ft).<\/p>\n

Later, in 1999 a further renovation costing $38 million lead to an expansion of the exhibition space of this Centre. A new entrance and open-air exhibition areas were introduced. The Omni-Theatre building that was separate until now was also directly connected to the main building. In 2000, Snow City which is a recreational area with a controlled environment of \u22125 \u00b0C (23 \u00b0F) was created beside the Omni-Theatre. This became a major attraction because it was a rare recreational option in tropical Singapore. And on its 30th anniversary on 7 December 2007, the Centre revamped its branding and changed its name to Science Centre Singapore (SCS).<\/p>\n
