The British surrender was fast and many Europeans were taken to Padang and sentenced to Changi prison. The following years are a dark period in the history of Singapore. The Japanese treated the Chinese with particular distrust and many were tortured, imprisoned and killed, often with the least excuses. Food and other basic needs decreased during the war, and malnutrition and disease spread. In 1945, when it became clear that Axis powers would lose the war, the Japanese surrendered on August 14, 1945, in Singapore. The British returned, but their reign was now in question.
