The popular <em>Vallam Kali<\/em> (boat game) is held annually on the second Saturday of the month of August. Boats of different sizes and types compete in the various boat races. Of these, the competition of the <em>Chundan Vallams<\/em> (snake boats) is the most popular one. <em>Churulan Vallam<\/em> (45-seater passenger boats), <em>Iruttukuthy Vallam<\/em>, <em>Odi Vallam<\/em>, <em>Veppu Vallam<\/em>, <em>Vadakkanody Vallam<\/em> and <em>Kochu Vallam<\/em> are the other categories of boat races that are held in this event.<\/p>\n<h3>How it started?<\/h3>\n<p>When Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru \u2013 the first prime minister of India \u2013 visited Kerala in 1952, he was escorted by the huge snake-boats. Thrilled by the exciting snake boat ride, he donated a rolling trophy that was to be awarded to the winner of the annual race. Under his death in 1964, the tournament was called the \u2018Prime Minister\u2019s Trophy\u2019.
