The piece of architecture was built way back in the early 1800s and mainly served as a footbridge in its initial years for Chinese merchants and Indian traders. Connecting both the roads namely North Bridge Road and South Bridge Road, the distinguishing feature of the bridge is the two cast-iron lamps with medallions on either side. Crafted by an Italian designer Cavalari Rudolfo Nolli, the medallions have an inscription of the Singapore Lion. The lamps lights up at dusk and lit up the bridge and the path with different colors.
