Built by King Mahendravarma I of the Pallava Dynasty in the 7th century, the Brahadambal Temple is dedicated to Kokarneswarar, a form of Lord Shiva. The temple has been known by other names such as Thirugokarnam, Kokarneswarar and Gokarneswarar Temple. Kokarneswarar is worshipped in the temple along with his consort Goddess Brahadambal, who was the guardian deity of the Thondaiman Kings.
