The exact origins of the Mangalnath Temple remain unknown. However, various historical records and literary references suggest its existence for centuries. There are eighteen major Hindu Puranas, the Matsya Purana being one of them. It clearly states Ujjain as the birthplace of Mangal or the planet Mars.<\/p>\n

The legend surrounding the temple’s association with Mars is interesting. According to the tale in Matsya Purana, Lord Shiva was in a violent and raging battle with the demon \u2018Andhakasura\u2019. The two-storeyed Mangalnath temple’s red sandstone structure is known for its intricate carvings and sculptures. The temple’s red colour is believed to signify the fiery nature of the planet Mars. The first floor houses the main sanctum of Lord Mangalnath, and the basement is open for performing various prayers, including Mangal dosh, Kaalsarp (serpent) dosh, Navagraha puja, etc.<\/p>\n

The sacred pond (Kund) within the complex possesses healing powers, and devotees often dip or sprinkle some water on their heads before entering the temple.<\/p>\n

\nMangalnath temple offers 21 different kinds of prayers. Devotees are allowed to enter the main chamber and offer prayers to Lord Shiva. The chief priest at the temple assists and guides the devotees with the appropriate rituals. The charges for carrying out different prayers are displayed at the temple entrance. Mangal dosha puja, Kaalsarpa dosh puja, and Navagraha puja are popular among the devotees.<\/p>\n

As we all know, Mangal, or planet Mars, is fiery and aggressive! The devotees perform a one-of-a-kind puja called the Bhaat Puja in the main sanctum. A Bhaat made of cooked and mashed rice mixed with curd is offered to Mangalnath. The belief is that this offering pleases him and cools him down. Usually, Pooja is from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. There are no specific aarti timings.<\/p>\n
