Like several other temples from the Khmer dynasty and reign, the history of Koh Ker Temple dates back to the 10th Century AD during the peak of the Khmer reign and dynasty. King Jayavarman IV ascended the throne in 928 AD, but his claim to power was opposed. Jayavarman IV’s reign in Koh Ker, lasting from 928 to 944 AD, was a period of heavy construction. He envisioned Koh Ker as a grand city, competing with the established grandeur of Angkor. This was primarily the vision that further pushed the construction of various temples and sanctuaries in the depths of the forest where the Koh Ker temple stands today. A reservoir was constructed for irrigation and sustaining the growing population. Over forty temples were erected, showcasing the far-stretched vision of the King. \nHowever, these peak months also witness a rise in tourist influx. If you prefer a quieter experience, consider visiting during the shoulder seasons (May-June and September-October).
