Manikavu Shiva Temple is spread over an area of 32 acres and was once densely covered with a variety of trees rare and endemic to the region, of which almost 30 acres were lost because of heavy deforestation.
\nSo, the locals and the environmentalists formed a trust to transform the barren land to its previous glory. With the help of the state government, the people of Manikavu successfully restored the equilibrium of nature and set an example for the world making the region of Manikavu, a zero-carbon footprint area.
\nTrees of different species including Vateria indica (Sarja), Vateria macrocarpa, Calophyllum inophyllum (Punnag\/Champa), Hopea parviflora (Malabar Ironwood), Hopea ponga (kambakam), Stereospermum colais (Trumpet Flower or Yellow Snake Tree), Butea monosperma (Dhak or Bastard Teak), Syzigium travanvoricum (a rare plum) and Kingiodendron pinnatum (Malabar Mahogany) as well as bamboo saplings on four acres of land on an experimental basis. Constructed around the 13th century BCE during the reign of the Vijayanagara Empire, this temple is an important Jain epicentre and one of the oldest in the state. During the reign of Tipu Sultan, this Jain temple served as an ammunition centre and housed some of his armies. This temple houses the idol of Mahavira inside the sanctum. Currently, the idol of Mahavira is housed in the Ananthanatha temple at Kalpetta, Kerala and brought to this temple once a year, on the eve of Mahavira Jayanthi.<\/p>\n
