Southadka is among the best siddi kshetras in the Dakshina Kannada district. It is also known as Maha Ganapati Kshetra due to the Sowthadka Shri Mahaganapati Temple. Although locals know this temple, it is not as well known in the rest of the country as it should be. The temple provides every devotee an equal opportunity to pray and worship the revered elephant-head God.<\/p>\n

The temple is relatively simple compared to the other temples you will see in the country, where the intricate carvings, complex architecture, and distinct features make the temples a grand destination. The Southadka temple\u2019s beauty lies in its simplicity. You will find that many bells have been tied around thin poles near the idol of Lord Ganesha. These bells were donated to the temple as the devotees asked for a wish and tied the bells with a red string. The bells are generally tied after the completion of rituals, and it is believed that tying a bell will ensure their wishes are fulfilled.<\/p>\n

You will find a goshala (or cow shed), some small shops that sell puja items, and a ticket counter cum office where you can buy seva tickets and prasadam in the temple complex. A temple kitchen also prepares the prasadam offerings given to Lord Ganesha first and then to the devotees who wish to purchase them and take them home. The idol of Lord Ganesha is installed on a large stone under an ancient and sacred tree. A slim arch surrounds the idol, and brass bells hang nearby. There are always brass lamps near the idol, which burn 24\/7.<\/p>\n

The Sowthadka Shri Mahaganapati Temple is mentioned in the sthala purana. It is believed that a royal family had a Ganapati temple that they revered. When enemies attacked the royal family, they destroyed the temple, too, but could not damage the idol of Lord Ganesha inside it. To keep the idol safe, some boys who herd cows took the idol with them to a location where cucumber is abundantly grown. When this happened, the farmers reaped huge benefits and were very happy. They offered the cucumber to God and decided to build a temple. However, the God had other plans.<\/p>\n

Lord Ganesha came in the dreams of one of the farmers, and he said he would not like a temple to be constructed. His devotees would face difficulties coming to the location to worship him and seek his blessings. Lord Ganesha specified that he wanted to remain in the open air without a temple structure so that anyone from anywhere could seek his blessings. There was no requirement to enter a temple formally. The farmer obeyed God\u2019s wishes, and to this day, the idol of Lord Ganesha remains open to everyone. The idol is perched on Southadka\u2019s green surroundings, and pilgrims come to seek blessings from God.<\/p>\n
