They have it that 400 years ago, the location was a field of large rocks with a temple site in the middle. Legend has it that when Lord Shree Ram and his companions, Lord Lakshman and Goddess Sita, were journeying to Chitrakoot, they had to cross the Yamuna River. In order to show his respect for Lord Shiva, Lord Shree Ram constructed a temple dedicated to the deity at that site. The Sujawan Dev Temple in Prayagraj is now home to this venerable structure. According to the tale, during their travels, Lord Shree Ram, Lakshman, and Sita erected Shiva lingams at each spot where they spent the night. Sujawan Dev temple is located near the area which was inhabited by some of the early civilizations and their descendants are still there. They earn by taking their boats to many places along the Yamuna River. However, it is important to remember that these devotees still have faith in the temple and the potency of the god that resides in it.

The temple is famous for its location between the Yamuna River and a small hill made of large rocks. It’s about 100 feet above the ground. After the festival of Diwali, a special occasion called “Bhai Dhuj” is organised here. Many people flock to the event and it is a happy occasion for everyone, especially those that are involved in the actual event. The occasion is generally a happy one that spans up to three days and is normally a colourful celebration.

Must Read: Places To Visit In Prayagraj

History Of Sujavan Dev Temple

Image Credit: Prayagraj Social for Facebook

The cave where Lord Ram, Lakshman, and Goddess Sita took shelter one night is officially recognized and marked by the Archaeological Survey of India Department. On its walls, various substances and materials can be found. Using these elements, experts have estimated that the cave is about 7,000 years old. This implies that it is possible that people had once occupied that cave around about 7,000 years ago. The people of the area worship in a site that they refer to as the Sita Rasoi. To show their devotion they placed a statue of deity Sita on a sand mound called a dune. This temple was unknown to people for quite some time. According to historian Dr Dinesh Ojha, after the Ghadar, when a branch of the Yamuna River flowed across the East Indian Railway, the contractors associated with it stumbled upon this place while searching for bricks. They discovered signs of an ancient civilization here while extracting bricks. The remains of an ancient city were visible, stretching from the north where the Sujavan Dev temple stood, to about 1.5 miles in the south. The temple must have been part of the city at one point, with its location in the middle of the Yamuna River. However, over time, the river’s flow eroded the land between the temple and the settlement, isolating the temple and transforming it into an island in the middle of the river.

Suggested Read: Allahabad Fort

Place For Shooting Films

This temple has quite a history, and it’s no wonder why it’s so beautiful.
