The St Augustine Tower in Old Goa has a long history, dating back to 1572 when the Augustine Friars arrived and constructed a tiny monastery on the hill. This convent grew over time, eventually becoming a three-story structure with two enormous stone stairs leading to the upper floors. Upon entering the convent, you will see two cloisters, hallways, pillars, galleries, halls with several chambers, a refectory (also known as a dining hall), a guest house, and an infirmary. These rooms were all quite large. In addition to the apartments, there were dormitories and other constructions. The whole portion of the structure is now in ruins. The convent was part of St. Augustine’s Church. According to historical records, the College of Populo was added to the complex around 1602. However, things took an unexpected turn when the Portuguese government of the period abolished the Augustinian monastic order in 1832.
\nBy 1835, all Augustinians in Goa had been compelled to depart. The St. Augustine Church eventually fell into disrepair. In 1842, the church’s massive vault collapsed. Almost a century later, in 1931, the fa\u00e7ade of the Church of St. Augustine collapsed. The towers fell in 1938. The Church of St. Augustine may not appear very significant, yet historical documents reveal that it was the most fantastic church complex at the time. It was also reported to be quite grand, as evidenced by numerous traveller’s reports. The St. Augustine Church also houses the relics of Queen Saint Ketevam of Georgia.

Ancient pictures, descriptions, and literature describe the church as having four levels and towers around it. For many years following, this was Goa’s largest tower. The church was built with red laterite and stood 46 metres tall. An extensive excavation revealed that the church included four altars, a convent, and eight chapels.
