The Durga temple is an extraordinary example of the Badami Chalukya’s intellect and genius. An architectural masterpiece, it boasts of an unusual and unique structure and architectural style known as Gaja Prishtha, which means the design has been influenced by the shape of an elephant, which is true if you closely observe the rear side of the temple.<\/p>\n

Multiple aspects of this temple have been inspired by various things, such as a fish wheel or northern Nagara-style. It is a beautiful place to spend some time and learn about its rich cultural significance. Even though it is known as the Durga Temple, the Goddess mentioned is not worshipped there. The name comes from the regional language of Karnataka, Kannada, where Durga means \u2018Fort\u2019. The Ravana Phadi Cave is an example of medieval-era Deccan architecture, belonging to the Western Chalukyas in the 6th century. Multiple chambers inside the temple depict several deities, such as Shiva in his Ardhanarishvara form with a trident, two Shaiva guards, and another sculpture with Shiva accompanied by Parvati and Bhringi with river goddesses.<\/p>\n

The panels inside the temple often depicted the political state at the time. When the Kadambas defeated the Chalukyas, they featured the Saptamatrikas, which could be assumed to be a show of dominance over the Chalukyas’ defeat.<\/p>\n

3. Lad Khan Temple<\/h3>\n

It was once one of the most ancient temples in India, then converted to living quarters by a prince called \u2018Lad Khan\u2019, hence the origin of the name. Built-in 450 AD, it neighbours the Durga Temple, another famous monument in Aihole.<\/p>\n

The cave’s structure is old and almost primal in its designs. The roof is low and flat, reflecting the time it was built. The temples’ windows are pierced rather than having a usual window frame. Initially, it was meant to be a Vishnu Temple, but it now houses a Shiva Linga.<\/p>\n

There are 10 temples in total, and the famous geographer Ptolemy documented this town as \u201cPer Gal.\u201d It was a significant sight for Kings as the place was used as a coronation centre. This temple complex has multiple styles, such as Dravidian, Aryan, a mix of both, and many others.<\/p>\n

The Holy Trinity\u2014Shiva, Vishnu, and Brahma\u2014are worshipped in this temple. The Sri Hucchimalli Temple is located in North Aihole. The most attractive sites of the temple are the steep water well and the complex carvings of Kartikeya and his attendants. The temple also houses carvings of Goddess Ganga and Yamuna.<\/p>\n
