The name Kemmangundi is derived from three words, \u2018Kempu\u2019 meaning \u2018Red\u2019, \u2018Mannu\u2019 meaning \u2018Soil\u2019 and \u2018Gundi\u2019 meaning \u2018Pit\u2019 in Kannada. All three put together means a place with red soil. The hill station is lined with mountains and hillocks, ornamental gardens, valleys, and waterfalls that are a treat to the eyes and a photographer\u2019s delight. Z point is a vantage point at Kemmangundi and is reached by a steep uphill trek about 45 minutes from Raj Bhavan. Shanthi Falls is on the way.<\/p>\n

Kemmannugundi was established as the summer retreat of Krishnaraja Wodeyar IV. He later donated this resort to the Government of Karnataka. The Horticultural Department of Karnataka now develops and maintains the resort and its surroundings. Kemmanagundi has a Subtropical Highland climate influenced by monsoons. It has three seasons: winter followed by Summer and Monsoon, and it has a cooler climate throughout the year than most cities in the subcontinent.<\/p>\n

To reach Hebbe Falls, one should arrive at Kemmannugundi Hill Station. Taxi can be hired from Birur or Chikmagalur to reach Kemmannugundi. From Kemmannugundi, the last 7 km must be covered on foot or by hiring local 4\u00d74 jeeps to reach Hebbe Falls. Visiting Hebbe Falls will require trekking, even after the jeep ride. Besides tourists can also trek a steep and narrow path of 8 km to reach the site. Permission is needed from Forest Authorities, who are available at the checkpoint. The best time to visit Hebbe Falls is between October and January, when the monsoon rains have left the forests lush and vibrant.

Located 10 km from Kemmanagundi, there is a small waterfall over elephant-shaped rocks, with a temple. Kalhatti Falls, or Kalhattigiri Falls, is a waterfall on the river’s headwaters at Kallathigiri, Tarikere Taluk, in the Chikmagalur district of Karnataka. The falls, believed to have been the abode of Sage Agastya, look enchanting amidst the undulating hills. It is located 2000 meters above sea level and is an absolute treat to the eyes. The water cascades down from a height of about 100 to 122 meters. The location has the infamous Veerabradeshwara Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. The entire area is covered with greenery.

Bhadra Wildlife Sanctuary is a protected area and tiger reserve as part of Project Tiger, situated in Chikkamagaluru district, 23 km south of Bhadravathi city, 38 km 20 km from Tarikere town. It is one of the must-visit places in Chikmagalur. Tourists can spot animals like leopards, tigers, and Malabar giant squirrels. Situated in the Western Ghats, it is renowned for being home to several species of flora and fauna. The rates for jeep safari are INR 400 per person for adults and INR 200 for children below 10 years of age for Indian Nationals.
