Thubten Yeshe and Thubten Zopa Rinpoche, the founders of the Foundation of the Preservation of the Mahayana Tradition, established the spiritual retreat known as Kopan Monastery. In 1969, the two founders bought a piece of land from one of Nepal’s most famous astrologers, and the Kopan Monastery was completed in 1971.<\/p>\n

In the initial years, the Kopan Monastery had 25 monks, and now the Monastery serves as a home to 350 people, including the monks, teachers, lamas, and other workers. Kopan has two separate institutions, one at the Kopan Hills and the other at the Kopan nunnery, established in 1979.<\/p>\n
