From 1505 to 1558<\/h3>\n

The Santa Cruz Cathedral Basilica’s history begins in the early 16th century after the Portuguese, led by Pedro \u00c1lvares Cabral, arrived in India in 1500. Seeking to dominate the spice trade, the Portuguese allied with the King of Cochin, Unni Goda Varma Tirumulpadu. In 1505, Dom Francisco de Almeida, the first Viceroy of Portuguese India, received permission from the King to build Fort Manuel (Fort Kochi) and two churches: the Santa Cruz Basilica and St. Francis Church.<\/p>\n
