The village of Soorakudi is in the Sivaganga District\u2019s Tirupathur region of Tamil Nadu. Soorakudi is around 50 miles from the Sivaganga district headquarters and only 10km from the sub-district headquarters of the Triputhat, also known as the Tehsildar Office. The village has a total area of 791.04 hectares and a population of 2,718. For all significant economic activity, the town closest to Soorakudi village is Singampunari.<\/p>\n

Soorakudi is famous for its magnificent architectural wonders and temples. It is also home to the Soorakudi temple, named after the Soorai shrub. The temple features two gopurams and ten vimanas and is known for its intricately carved sculptures and idols. 1. Desikanathar Temple<\/h3>\n

Desikanathar Temple is one of the nine temples known as Nagarathar in the Soorakudi and was initially named after the temple’s principal deity, Desikanathapuram. The temple’s sthala puranam describes how Suryan visited several temples to appease Lord Siva after being defeated by Veerabhadrar at Daksha’s yagam. He eventually began to worship Siva in this location.<\/p>\n

As per locals, the existing temple is a new construction and more contemporary in design and architecture than the old one. Nagarathar influence is evident in the architecture of many of the temples in the Chettinadu region. The temple faces east and features a mandapam between the Teertham and Raja Gopuram and a tank directly to the east. The dhwajasthambam, Bali peetham, and Nandi are housed in the elevated maha mandapam. It’s remarkable and unique because Nandi’s pedestal is supported by four yalis, a feature shared by several other temples in this area.<\/p>\n

Sundareswarar Temple in Soorakudi is another Nagarathar temple dedicated to Siva. It was built in the early Pandya era. This east-facing temple has a mottai gopuram instead of a raja gopuram, with two additional celestials flanking either side and a welcoming arch of plaster images of Siva as Rishabharoodar with Parvati.<\/p>\n

The entry is closed because the temple develops bushes and plants, although a tiny entrance on the southern side takes us directly to the Amman shrine. Sundareswarar Temple features a stunning maha mandapam with a tall dhwajasthambam, a Bali peetham, and a Nandi. The temple is worth visiting, as the Maha Mandapam’s architecture and beautiful carvings on every pillar will fascinate you.<\/p>\n
