About Pachmarhi

A picturesque and exotic hill resort Pachmarhi is often termed as the Queen of Satpura Ranges. It is situated at an altitude of1067 feet and offers attractions like ancient caves and magnificent monuments. It is indebted to a highly creative officer of theBritish regime Captain Forsyth. On the basis of his recommendation it was converted to a famous sanatorium and later a hill station.
Its country side is marked by rocky hills, woody forests and deep canyons. The lush green pastures are combined with themajestic hills and the cascading waterfalls . One of the best sights is the setting of Sun in the horizon. Large scale excavations in the hilly terrain are of significance from archaeological point of view. It is one of the prized jewels ofMadhya Pradesh in terms of greenery and scenic beauty. One can hear the placid mutter of flowing water quite frequently. Bristle paths lead to calm forest basins, orchards of jamun, dense sal forests and delicate bamboo thickets.
Pipariya is the nearest railway station which is 47 km away from Pachmarhi. Bhopal airport is the nearest airport which is195 km away. Regular buses ply to and from Pachmarhi which is connected to major cities in the State.
Handi Khoh is bounded by a deep forest and is closely related to Lord Shiva. There is a popular belief that it was earlier a lakeand a snake was guarding the lake which was actually a demon. Lord Shiva killed the snake and the fury of the divine battle dried thewater in the lake and the empty space assumed the shape of a handi. A magnificent ravine, Handi kho is excellent for peace lovers.
Jata Shankar caves in Pachmarhi is a holy site for Shaivites and comprises of a natural cavern which houses a natural Shivalingam. The stone formation in the lake resembles the hundred headed snake Seshnag. It is supposed to be a place where Lord Shiva sought shelteragainst Bhasmasur. Jambu Dweep stream originates from the loose boulders of the cave. The loose rocks of this cave look like thematted hair of Lord Shiva hence the name JataShankar.
Pandava caves located on a small hillock are believed to be the resting place for Pandavas. These five caves became a refuge toBuddhist monks in the 1st century. Draupadi Kuti is the most clean and airy and Bhim Kothari is the dark one.
A natural bathing pool formed by a tiny waterfall Apsara Vihar is located near the Pandav caves. It is shallow at the end and makes it a favourite tourist spot. This pool is ideal for safe swimming and diving. This pool is also known as Fairy Pool.
Bee Falls provide drinking water to Pachmarhi and exhibits a beautiful look. This is one of the most exotic waterfalls of Pachmarhiand is called Jamuna Prapat. One can enjoy a walk over the rocks and stones from Apsara Vihar to the bathing pools at the top ofRajat Prapat.
Duchess Falls lie in the Satpura Range and the fascinating waterfall stumble down in three different cascades and it crashes down100m creating a harsh roaring sound.
Situated at an altitude of 1326m Chauragarh Peak presents beautiful scenes of dense forests, valleys and hills and is one of thepilgrim centers in Pachmarhi. On the top of the hill holy shrine of Mahadev is located.
