About Jammu and Kashmir Tourism

Say hello to a land of unrivalled beauty and history

Jammu and Kashmir is located among the Himalayan, Pir panjal and Karakoram mountain ranges. It is famously known as the "Paradise on Earth" because of its gorgeous valleys, mountains, lakes, forests and meadows. Along with its breathtaking landscape, Jammu and Kashmir. The state of Jammu and Kashmir has two capitals according to the season. While Jammu is the winter capital of the state, Srinagar is the summer capital. This contributes largely to its tourism during the major seasons. There are a plethora of places to see and things to in Kashmir for all kinds of travelers. If you are planning a trip to Jammu and Kashmir, you must know about its places of attractions, activities offered and a few other interesting things which also form an integral part of Kashmir tourism

The Dal Lake and the Mughal Gardens in Srinagar accentuate the Kashmir tourism. There may not be a heaven or a land of milk and honey, but there is Kashmir Valley, which attracts travelers from all over the world. Drifting shikaras on sparkling lakes on a summer evening, the vibrancy of Mughal gardens in spring, enjoying snowfall on a winter’s day, and apple picking in an autumn’s afternoon are some of the ways to put a state of ecstasy on your face.

History of Kashmir

Bounded by Punjab and Himachal Pradesh to the south, Afghanistan to the north-west and Pakistan to the west; Kashmir is located in the north-western region of India. Since the partition of the Indian continent in 1947, as this region has become the subject of dispute between the two nations, India and Pakistan, its south and south-eastern portion makes a state of India. And, as per the agreement of 1972, the administered portions of  the two nations are divided by a ‘line of control’.

Culture of Kashmir

Replete with a rich and varied culture, the lifestyle of Kashmiri people is mostly influenced by literature, dance, music, food and festivals that are celebrated there. With exposure to solidarity during the times of independence, the locals of Kashmir have become a part of new literature and learning. Blessed with glacial mountains, crystal clear waters, pine forests, Chinar groves, and pine trees, the region of Kashmir has been detached from the whole country for a long time. However, now it inhabits people from different races, making it a potpourri of different cultures. Tourism in Kashmir takes a glimpse into the culture of Kashmir as well Srinagar and other places in the state.

Honeymoon in Kashmir

Epitomizing romance, resplendent nature, breathtaking views, and the surreal settings of the region make it one of the best travel destinations for honeymoon. Boasting tranquillity and scenic views, the beguiling beauty of Pahalgam is beyond words. While, Gulmarg-another glittering town of Kashmir offers some romantic backdrops replete with lush green meadows and snow-clad mountains.

Whether you’re trekking with nomads or expats in Pir Panjals; cherishing honeymoon in meadows of Sonamarg; enjoying views of snow-capped glaciers on pony rides in Pahalgam; skiing in Gulmarg on fresh snow; making an arduous pilgrimage to bow before your maker; just admiring the serenity of Dal Lake in your lover’s arms; Kashmir never lets you down.

Attractions in Kashmir

Tourist places in Jammu and Kashmir comprise unimaginable beauty. As you have strolled through narrow markets of Srinagar, taken the bumpy – or somewhat scary – rides along the Jhelum or Chenab, you can’t leave behind Kashmir. The state of absolute bliss, to be here and having lived here, stays with you wherever you go.

Commence an enticing journey to the crown of India with a visit to Srinagar. And, as get to enjoy the Shikara ride while sailing through the snow-clad mountains and sparkling waters of Dal Lake. While, a visit to Leh introduces you not only with its queer beauty but adventure too. Grab an opportunity to satiate an adrenaline junkie in yourself, and partake in trekking, mountain biking and many more activities. However, if you want enjoy skiing, Gulmarg is one of the most best destinations to hop on to. Besides that, a tour of Sonmarg, Pahalgam, Doda, and many more gems of the region are meant to make your journey a memorable one.

The occasional traveller may not realise on the first visit, but Kashmir is like a multi-faceted jewel. Longer you stare at it, more beautiful it gets. The Jammu region has a lot of Hindu temples, local museums, and historical sights, while Kashmir is all about being outdoors. Streets in summer are lively and buzzing with local guides and vendors whereas snowfall in winter provides a much-needed boost to Kashmir tourism and region’s economy.

Things to Do in Kashmir

Blessed with alluring landscapes, the Heaven on Earth offers a bounty of offerings for every kind of traveller, be they adventure enthusiasts, nature lovers or connoisseurs. Curating one of the best lists of things to do, the crown of India really knows how to win its visitors’ hearts.

As you enjoy a sojourn in Kashmir, do go for a shikara ride on Dal Lake, and cherish the alluring surroundings. And for panoramic views, one can get on a gondola ride. While, a tour to Magnetic Hill is surely meant to provide its visitors with some magical views. People can also get to enjoy trekking at Chadar Lake, and grab an opportunity to enjoy a sojourn in a wooden houseboat.

Festivals of Kashmir

While, the major sightseeing and activities do offer an exhilarating experience to the visitors of Kashmir, this paradise on earth also let people enjoy many festivals that also add a bouquet of memories to their journey. Inhabiting people of many cultures, here one can enjoy the celebration of Eid ul Azha, Festival of Hemis, Baisakhi- which embarks the harvesting season, annual festival of Shikara, and many more.

Shopping in Kashmir

What’s more? As you are busy making making some beautiful memories on this tour, the markets of Kashmir filled with ethnic art and craft pieces offer you a chance to take some memories along back home. Here, visitors can choose to buy souvenirs like: handicrafts, pashmina shawls, saffron, hand-woven carpets, and much more.

Famous Food of Kashmir

Once you’ve inhaled the aroma of famous dishes of Kashmir- Rogan Josh, Modar Pulav, and Matschgand, the gluttony side of you will beguile to extend the sojourn for a longer time. However, that are not the only dishes you can indulge yourself in here. Crammed with a bevy of restaurants, here you can also enjoy dishes, including momos, thukpa, skyu- a traditional dish of Leh, and sip a cup of butter tea, which is mind-boggling.

How To Reach Jammu and Kashmir

Read about the best & quickest routes to save time & money, as suggested by our travelers

By Air

Srinagar International Airport (SXR), also known as Sheikh-ul-Alam Airport, and Kushok Bakula Rimpochee Airport (IXL) in Leh are the major airports in Jammu and Kashmir state. The airport in Srinagar is connected with major cities in India including Delhi, Kolkata, Mumbai, and Bangalore. The airport in Leh has direct flights to and from Delhi, Mumbai, and Srinagar. Taxi rentals and private shuttles are available at both airports in Jammu and Kashmir.

Furthermore, Jammu Aiport or Jammu Civil Enclave handles domestic flights from major urban centres in India.

By Train

Jammu Tawi, located in the state’s winter capital, is the busiest railway station in Jammu and Kashmir. It serves as the northern terminal of major trains connecting the city with the rest of India. Regular express trains from Jammu to Delhi, Mumbai, Kolkata, and Trivandrum run efficiently.

The picturesque section between Banihal and Baramulla of Jammu–Baramulla railway line passes through several towns in Kashmir Valley. It is an excellent alternative for those wanting to take the tracks not often taken.

By Road

Jammu and Srinagar, seasonal capitals of the state can be reached throughout the year by road. Jammu is served by a network of state and national highways. If you’re wondering about how to reach Kashmir Valley by road, follow the NH1(A) that passes through the city of Jammu to Srinagar in Kashmir Valley. The highway continues to the east before terminating at Leh in Ladakh region. NH1 is a major and vital highway which handles the primary traffic coming in and out of the region. Government and private operators run buses and taxis between Jammu, Srinagar, and Leh.

The Jawahar Tunnel, 2.8 kilometres in length, connects Jammu with Kashmir Valley. The 3,528-m-high mountain pass Zoji La carries the Srinagar-Leh highway extending into Ladakh. The 474-km-long Leh-Manali Highway is another major road with serving the Ladakh region. Both Srinagar-Leh and Leh-Manali highways remain vulnerable to weather conditions in winter as the snowfall blocks the road access.

Soumitra's 5 days trip to Kashmir

We had a disappointing experience during our trip to Kashmir in the first week of April. Though the agent helped us create an itinerary, they couldn't justify the price. However, the driver was well-mannered. We stayed for one night in Pahalgam, two nights in a hotel in Srinagar, and one night in a
houseboat in Srinagar. The hotel stays were good, except for the houseboat. The food at the hotel was good, but at the houseboat, it was not up to the mark and was not sufficient. Moreover, the cost of the hotel and houseboat stay was very high. If you're planning to visit Kashmir, it's advisable to research activities and prices in advance. Locals may try to overcharge, so it's best to be aware of prices beforehand. You can skip Pahalgam if you're planning to visit Gulmarg and book a gondola ride in advance online. There isn't much to see in Pahalgam, so it's better to stay in Srinagar and explore local places and try their authentic cuisine. Wherever you go from Srinagar, you'll find snow. Therefore, choose your places wisely, as you'll see the same thing everywhere. It's essential to be careful since hotels are expensive, and locals may try to indulge you in different activities at high prices which aren't worth it. Although Breezy Travels helped us plan the trip better, I find Kashmir overrated compared to Himachal and Uttarakhand.

Our Srinagar and gulmarg stay was decent but there was a constant reminder from the hotel about pending payments by Emaar. but fo
r the stay in pahalgham we didn't have a confirmed booking as per the itenary due to some miscommunication between emaar and Hotel sales dept. we had to wait in the lobby with a toddler sleeping in my lap for 2 hrs. Miss Ifrah however tried her best to resolve the issue but it was really out of her hands. our tour driver Adil was very good and polite. but was constantly pre-occupied. Coming to travel triangle there is a lot more to improve . I think you should followup about the itenary and hotel insights more rather than just acting as payment gateway portal. Nikita Jaiswal our tour guide from TT was good but didn't have enough knowledge about the process. they must be trained properly before handling a client. overall experience was decent could have been much better.
