About Jaisalmer Tourism

In the proud desert city, Jaisalmer tourism provides visitors an opportunity to take a glimpse into the past glories of the region. A tour to the city of Jaisalmer boasts a unique experience and definitely something one has to undertake when traveling in India. Situated in the heart of the Thar Desert, it is an ideal destination to witness natural beauty of the desert. The interesting part of the tour of the Golden City is that Sonar Quila, one of the prominent tourist attractions, is a living fort where hundreds of people still inhabit.

Besides sightseeing of major attractions, such as Fort Rajwada, Sam Sand Dunes, Jaisalmer Fort and many more, tourists can also indulge themselves in dune bashing, jeep safari, and camel safari for a thrilling experience.

Places to Visit in Jaisalmer

Covered in golden sand and dotted with Jain temples, lakes, castles and palaces clad in the sandstones of golden yellowish colour, the Golden City, Jaisalmer is a desert town. Set off for a tour to this astonishing place in Rajasthan, and grab a chance to explore the wondrous sites that leave every traveller spellbound, and beguile them to extend their sojourn.

With Jaisalmer Fort standing as a crown atop the city, here are plenty of attractions to savour that can make the journey unforgettable.

Jaisalmer Fort

A huge yellow sandstone fortification, Jaisalmer Fort is also known as the Golden Fort or Sonar Quila. Come to visit this attraction for its architectural wonder which is a great example of the rich heritage of the country. What’s more? With two canon points located within the fort let tourists enjoy a panoramic view of the city.

Gadisar Lake

Constructed as a water conservation tank in the 14th century, Gadisar Lake is one of the best places to visit during the sightseeing tour of the city. Encompassing numerous temples, including the Krishna Temple, the lake also boasts many experiences like boating and bird watching to cherish.

Patwon Ki Haveli

Nestled in a narrow street, Patwon ki Haveli is a beautifully carved palace in Jaisalmer. A cluster of five grandiose havelis, this attraction is an intricate architecture that has managed to maintain fine wall paintings, archways, gateways, and astonishing jharokhas till date.

Besides the above mentioned attractions, tourists are also recommended to visit Salim Singh ki Haveli, Tanot Mata Temple, Mandir Palace along with some other places that are astonishing. Extending many millennia through history, a trip to Jaisalmer can take travelers on a journey through time. The Aakal or Wood Fossil Park just outside the city is a site where the geological evidence of events that happened millions of years earlier can be observed. A Jaisalmer city tour takes one through the age of the proud Rajputs and the establishment of a faith like Jainism.

Things to Do in Jaisalmer

Besides exploring the spiritual heritage sites, visiting historical monuments, and enjoying some peaceful moments along lakes, the golden city also has a treat for adventurous souls.

Dune Bashing

Considered as the popular sport activity of the Gulfs and the Arabs, dune bashing can be best enjoyed in the Thar Desert in a four-wheel drive. With stretches of sweeping dunes, one can hop on an excursion to Sam Sand Dunes, and enjoy dune bashing in Jaisalmer for a thrilling experience.

Parasailing

Sailing above the desert of Jaisalmer, tourists can enjoy panoramic views of the golden city while partaking in the activity of parasailing. To have a pleasing experience, it is advised to opt for an early morning or evening slot of the activity.

Camel Safari

One of the most preferred activity in the desert of Jaisalmer, the exotic camel safari leave people with an experience to be cherished forever. To make the most of their camel ride, tourists can choose to navigate through markets and architectural marvels.

Apart from sightseeing and adventure activities, a tour to Jaisalmer has a treat for foodies. With various eateries serving local delicacies to experience the taste of Rajasthan like kachoris and samosas, readily available alcohol, bhang and much more, here is a wholesome and complete experience awaiting. Moreover, in this city of royalty, royal luxuries are not hard to find either. Luxury stays including a desert camp are available throughout the place for tourists.

With such a wide variety of experiences available, if one is looking for an experience in Rajasthan that relates to sand dunes, camels, and royalty, then a holiday in Jaisalmer is absolutely perfect for them. If you like Indian culture and traditions, its aesthetic richness, then visiting Jaisalmer or any other city in Rajasthan would be the perfect option for you as it is really an admirable city with so much to offer you and tell you about the rich Indian culture and traditions. The sand dunes tour in Jaisalmer where you will be served with the most relishing Rajasthani cuisine, exotic experience of camel safari and admiring the sunset views is what acts like a cherry on the cake on this trip to Jaisalmer. Read about the best & quickest routes to save time & money, as suggested by our travelers

By Air

Wondering how to reach Jaisalmer by air? The Golden City currently does not have an airport that civilian flights land at and therefore is not directly accessible by air. The nearest airport is Jodhpur Airport, which is well connected to the other major airports in the country. Reaching Jaisalmer directly from Jodhpur airport involves getting a cab from the airport itself. Travelers can either get a private or prepaid cab. They are available but are fairly expensive as it’s a 5-6 hour journey by road.<readmore> The nearest international airport is Delhi which is connected to most of the countries in the world. Flights from important Indian cities like Mumbai, Delhi, Kolkata, and Chennai to Jodhpur are quite frequent as well.

By Train

Jaisalmer is well connected to most of the cities by train and there are multiple options for travelers traveling from anywhere in India. There are direct trains going to Jaisalmer or passing through Jaisalmer from cities like Jodhpur, Jaipur, Delhi, Mumbai, and even Kolkata among many others. There are three trains that travel daily between Jodhpur and Jaisalmer, for those looking to travel within Rajasthan. There are also 4 trains that travel from Delhi straight to Jaisalmer, with two leaving every day and one being a superfast train.<readmore> In terms of trains, there is also the luxury Palace on Wheels experience that begins in Delhi before going through the important cities of Rajasthan, including Jaisalmer.

By Road

There are two options when going to Jaisalmer by road, one is by bus and the other is to drive yourself. Bus services to Jaisalmer are available from all major cities in Rajasthan like Jodhpur and Jaipur. There are no direct buses from Delhi but you can switch buses in Jaipur and continue your journey from there to reach Jaisalmer from Delhi. The distance from Jodhpur to Jaisalmer by road can be covered in 6 to 7 hours. It may take up to 15 hours to travel from Delhi to Jaisalmer via cab.

The other option is to drive to Jaisalmer and it’s probably a good idea to stop at Jaipur or Ajmer on the way. The distances from some of the cities to Jaisalmer are Jodhpur - 235 kilometers, Jaipur - 559 kilometers, Delhi - 768 kilometers, Mumbai - 1065 kilometers. Driving from Jaipur and Jodhpur is fine but coming all the way from Delhi and Mumbai is only recommended for seasoned drivers or riders as this is a long road.

Being the shorter trip of the two, while coming from Delhi, it is a good idea to take a halt in either Ajmer or Jodhpur as these lie somewhere in the middle of the route.<readmore> While coming from Mumbai, there are two routes available. Both routes are the same till Vadodara, then the more common, the shorter route goes by Gandhinagar and straight through Palanpur and Barmer.
