About Hanoi Tourism

Hanoi is the capital of Vietnam and also the second largest city in the country, after Ho Chi Minh City in southern Vietnam. Located on the banks of the famous Red River, Hanoi has seen its share of historical events and made its contribution to them.

History of Hanoi:

Over the years, the importance of the city in Vietnam’s administration has peaked and trenched dramatically. From 1010 AD to 1802 AD, Hanoi was the most important political centre of the country. But when the Nguyen Dynasty spread its empire all over Vietnam, their ancient capital Hue took over the limelight.

However, once again during the French colonization of Indochina, the city rose to prominence and has stayed so till date. When the Democratic Republic of Vietnam was formed, prime minister Ho Chi Minh decided to make Hanoi the capital of the country.

Over the next few decades, it grew exponentially in terms of economy, resulting Hanoi tourism as the major contributor in the growth of the nation.

Major Attractions in Hanoi:

Hanoi tourism is a dynamic combination of natural beauty, historical significance and the general urban fabric of the city. The most visited monument of the city has to be Ho Chi Minh Mausoleum. The colossal marble structure has the embalmed remains of the greatest political leader of the country inside. In spite of strict security and dress codes, it is still one of the best sights of Hanoi travel. Other very unique attractions of the city are the Temple of Literature, One Pillar Pagoda, Imperial Citadel of Thang Long, Temple of Jade Mountain and the Hoa Lo Prison. Besides these places, there is so much more to see and explore in the capital city of the Land of the Ascending Dragon.

Talking of dragons, the bay where the dragons descend into the sea is yet another attraction of Hanoi trip. The emerald green water surface, the limestone caves, the towers of karst landforms – all of these can be found together on a Halong Bay day trip from Hanoi. For those who want to indulge in educational tours instead of natural or historical sightseeing can hop around the various museums of the city. The National Museum of Vietnamese History, Ho Chi Minh Museum, Museum of Ethnology, Military History Museum, Fine Arts Museum – the options are endless.

But in the opinion of many, the best of Hanoi is Bach Ma temple, founded in 1010 AD by the Ly dynasty and reconstructed in the 18th century by the Nguyen.

Top markets in Hanoi:

Sightseeing is not the only thing to do in Hanoi. There are many other activities to indulge in as well. The Dong Xuan market is a must-visit place to do some quintessential shopping in the city. All the four storeys are full of shops selling cheap garments, watches, accessories, footwear, electronics, funky decors, jewellery and other endless list of things.

The Hanoi street markets are no less. The weekend market held from Friday to Sunday is an essential part of shopping as well as nightlife.

Nightlife in Hanoi:

Talking of nightlife, Hanoi has enough nightclubs and pubs to soak in some drinking and partying too. For some different sort of experiences, one can visit the Hanoi Opera House for an evening’s show or see water puppetry at the Thang Long Theatre by Hanoi Bay Vietnam.

Vietnamese Cuisine in Hanoi:

Like its varied weather, Vietnamese cuisine also leave tourists spellbound as every region has its special cuisine to serve. On an excursion to Vietnam, one must try Barbecued Pork with Vermicelli in Bua Cha Huong Lien and Hung Lau; Crab Spring Rolls in Hung Lau and Bun Cha Dac Kim; Grilled Fish with Dill and Turmeric in Cha Ca restaurant along with other famous foods.

How to Reach Hanoi

Read about the best & quickest routes to save time & money, as suggested by our travelers

By Air

Credit to its international airport, Noi Bai International Airport, there are plethora of frequent flights to help one reach Hanoi in the shortest possible time. As Hanoi is well-connected to major Indian cities like Mumbai, Kolkata, Bangalore and Delhi, the distance between Hanoi and India can be covered in 7 hours 45 minutes while boarding a Delhi to Hanoi flight operated by Thai Airlines. Besides this, one can also board flights from Mumbai to Hanoi or Bangalore to Hanoi as well. For a hassle-free tour, it is always advised to buy flight tickets in advance not only to get availability but discounts as well.

By Road

Reaching from any Indian city like Bangalore, Mumbai or Delhi to Vietnam by road is a time-consuming process which takes a lot of effort and arrangements as well. First of all, one needs to have all the visa documents and others papers ready, because there are multiple international borders to cross. However, the roadway exists and can be travelled if one really wants to. The first step is to reach the north-eastern state Manipur, from where the India-Myanmar-Thailand Friendship Road will move to the Yangon-Mandalay Expressway. This Expressway leads to Hanoi. From Kolkata to Hanoi, this journey takes 86 hours approximately and more than 100 hours from all other metro cities. Though an exciting one, this mode of transport is not the best policy.

By Car/ Taxi/Bus:

Upon arrival at the airport, one can choose to hire a taxi, bus, or car at reasonable rates, and roam around the city of Hanoi for a joyful experience.

Karishma and her team did a wonderful job in arranging our trip.. Initially we faced some issues with the flight from kolkata to Hanoi.. The web checkin was not properly done. Hence we had got scattered seats in the flight and it was difficult with a kid. The hotel in Hanoi was also not good. So we
never would suggest Skylark Hotel to anyone. Coming to the rest of the trip.. Everything was well planned. The tours were excellent with luxurious transport facilities. Overall its a very nice experience.. We would highly recomment trippro to others.

Srinivasa's 14 days trip to Hanoi

Recently I completed my 2 weeks trip to Cambodia and Vietnam. As I was travelling with my family of 11 members for this trip, I had opted for Private transfers and Private tour everywhere. From Travel Triangle, I received 3 Tour Agencies. 2 of those where in discussion with me while the 3rd Agency
hardly was communicating with me. Among these 2 Agencies Michael from SVietnam Trips was the only one who was actively in contact with me and I ended up booking my trip with him. My Trip guide Harvinder from Travel Triangle reached out to me only during initial payment. Before and after that no follow up from Travel Triangle. Would like to take few names and express my feedback. Michael from SVietnam Trips: Right from the day tour agencies got allocated, Michael had been in contact with me. No matter how late it may get in the night, he would never forget to respond and tries closing out my queries. As my travel group was big with different age group and difference choice of places, I had to do lot of research on my own to handpick few places which are not in the common itinerary any agencies would provide. Michael was very co-operative and patient while accommodating all my changing needs and itineraries. Wherever he lacked knowledge he tried gathering info and suggested me on my itineraries. He ensured he would be available over the phone throughout my trip and he lived up to this expectation. When we visited Ha Noi, he had come to airport to greet us and also gave me a local SIM newly bought for me free of cost. On the next day as promised, he had visited our hotel and took me to a Currency Exchange place where he had got me very good rates and also helped me in getting Indian Dinner parcel in his own vehicle. On the last day of our Ha Noi stay he had come to a mall where we took a pit stop and helped us with shopping and guiding in the mall. Throughout our trip, every day in the evening he used to check with us on how our trip went and if any help needed. My family and I liked all of these gestures including his personal visit whenever we needed his help and showing that extra care which I hadn’t experienced from any other travel agencies I had traveled before. This is where he went an extra mile to ensure quality service assured by him is provided. Very impressive and would highly recommend him for your Tours. To say a few words about Tour Guides, we were lucky to have got very good tour guides in every place we traveled which I would recommend except for the guide in Ho Chi Minh City. Nak in Cambodia, Thuy in Sapa, Chung in Ha Noi and Linh in Da Nang & Hoi An were very friendly, happy going, informative and approachable. They made us feel very comfortable and ensured we had good time in our tour enjoying every place covered in the itinerary. Special Notes: -> Thuy in Sapa: My aunt and MIL were senior citizens who were finding it difficult to climb the stairs, Thuy took an extra step and special care to assist them everywhere while climbing and walking. My aunt felt blessed to have such a person holding her hands and helping her to walk everywhere slowly at her comfort. When one of us lost our mobile phone in a Cable car, he stood by us and helped co-ordinating with customer service and housekeeping until we got back our phone. -> Chung in Ha Noi: He was always smiling guy. Stayed with my aunt to take care of her and kept addressing her as ‘Mumma’ which made my aunt feel very touchy for his special care & attention. -> Linh in Da Nang & Hoi An: She was very joyful and cheerful. Once when we got late in the night after our day trip, she and her friend helped in booking pickup cab for us and followed up till we reached out hotel. The tour guide named Lucky in Ho Chi Minh City compared to others we felt was okayish. She wasn’t that informative and wasn’t much open to us. Example: In Cu Chi tunnel when we saw other guides stopping in each & every spot explaining for 5-10 min in detail, Lucky was just skipping explanation for those places and was asking us to see and understand the instruction board. We had to ask her on most of those spots which she skipped to specifically share some info as other guides where explaining few details. Overall we weren’t happy with Cu Chi Tunnel tour. Despite this place having a huge historical significance, the guide made it look very basic by giving very limited information. From Travel Triangle, I am not happy at all for their service. Apart from follow up for initial payment, I dint see any effort from them or their Trip guide to enquire whether my trip was started, how my trip was going on and whether my trip ended well or not. Except the system generated formality emails on payment and feedback, no communication from their team. Overall I would say we had a fabulous trip and very good experience with SVietnam Trips. All thanks to Michael for extending his care & support throughout our trip. If I have to take another trip, I would rather go directly to Michael from SVietnam Trips than any other agencies or even Travel Triangle.
