I am writing this elaborate review hoping this will be helpful to someone who is searching for a near future Bali trip. Ours is basically a honeymoon trip. So I wanted everything to be planned ahead as I didn’t want to land in confusion there.
CURRENCY:
Make sure you carry Indonesian Rupiah (IDR) from India as most of the restaurants in Indonesia accept only RUPIA not Rupees. Few accept USD but conversion rate in restaurants or shops is not fair. If you don’t get Rupiah then take US Dollars. In Indonesia, USD has the least exchange commission less than 0.05%. Were as for Indian Rupee conversion, the commission is more than 30%. Say for example 1 USD = 13570 IDR. If you take $1 you get 13470 IDR. 100IDR will be commission. But for Indian rupee 1INR=212 IDR whereas when you convert you get 1INR=150 IDR. The commission is 60 IDR. Think logically here. On the other hand, you will find Forex shops in every corner. So, no worries.
Converting the INR to USD and converting back the USD to INR after the trip will bring the conversion commission to almost 3.5%. My advice is that you use your Credit/Debit cards whenever it is possible as they only charges 3.5% on foreign currency transactions. Few credit cards charge only 1-2%. Check that with your bank.
Remember, don’t exchange in airports as the Forex shops in airports maintain special rates. I observed the same in India, Malaysia and Indonesia. For 1USD they charge 5+INR as commission. Means, you pay 70 INR for 1 USD whereas in any Indian city you pay only 65 INR. In Indonesia, make sure to count your money properly before you accept and do not carry cash in hands anywhere around, use wallet.
FLIGHT:
I have taken Airasia flight as it is the only service available from Hyderabad, India. I can say it is not a comfortable journey unless you book a flatbed seat or you are less than 5’5” feet. The most ridiculous part is that this airline charges everything including water, which is free in all Indian carriers. So, make sure that you have some money during your journey in both To and Fro Trip that too in local currency. Carry a laptop or mobile loaded with movies as there is no in-flight entertainment.
Remember, Airasia charges for anything more than 7Kg cabin baggage per person. So be careful while you book. Make sure you book extra check-in baggage. The funniest part is that they even charge you for allotting seat for your wife adjacent to yours. After travelling in Airasia I felt Indian carriers are much much better. Ha ha..
EXPENDITURE:
Travel Toogle booked everything in advance including hotels, cabs, tolls and sightseeing entry fee. The major expenditure for me in Bali is food and shopping. Whatever I liked were expensive and not possible to carry to India by Airasia flight. I took $500 and that was more than sufficient for me for my all Lunch and Dinner, few cab rides to nearby markets, small shopping and few water sport activities that were not included in my itinerary.
BEST THINGS I ENJOYED:
Undoubtedly Bali is a fantastic place to visit. It is cheap and best for Asia Pacific countries. You can find the best locations in Google. So, I am not elaborating on them. But I am writing down few I liked.
Water activities:
Don’t hesitate to spend few extra bucks on water activities. You will enjoy them a lot. But at the same time do not forget to bargain in every place that you visit in Bali. Ask for half the price and believe me you will get it for that price including water activities. You will save a lot in water activities as they are the costliest part of your outdoor time.
Kintamani:
There are few restaurants in Kintamani that has the best Volcano view such as Madhu Sarai. Don’t miss that meal. I loved that part and worth a try. One Indian buffet meal =240000 IDR and one Indonesian Buffet Meal= 187000 IDR.
Uluwatu tour with Kedak Dance:
Make sure you have a DSLR camera so that you will never miss that Indian Ocean view in Uluwatu. Kecak dance is about the Ramayana. The artists are very engaging.
Private Pool Villa:
I stayed in Sana Vie Villa. The Villa is so good that I will always miss that privacy, comfort and that pool. It is a brand new, clean, well maintained and affordable Villa. It is 4 kms from Semiyank, the busiest and costliest shopping area in Bali.
FOOD AND RESTAURANTS:
Prices are twice that of Prices in India. Quality is good but the quantity is half that you get in Indian restaurants. This makes the prices technically 4 times that you find in India. This is true with almost every restaurant in Bali.
Carry some Indian snack. You can also find small supermarkets named Alfamart or Indomaret in every locality where you can find some snack. Always buy water from supermarkets or small shops as branded or big restaurants charge 4-5 times more than original price.
The best restaurants I visited are
1) Chai Ba. One of the best restaurants I ever dined in my life. We had our Valentine’s Day dinner there. May be you should try if you stay near Semiyank area. It is close by. Ask for spicy chicken wings and the Hulk Smoothie. I loved those. There was also a chef from India.
2) Warung Pappy, a cheap and best restaurant run by a Mallu. He is very friendly and food is good.
3) Ganesa, a good Indian restaurant with friendly staff.
4) Madur Sarai in Kintamani with Volcano view. Food is more Indonesian but the view is fantastic. Like I said above you will remember it forever.
CAB:
Our cab was booked by Travel Toogle. So I did not spend a single penny on cab other than last day tip to the driver. Cab will play a good role in your trip so choose wisely. Drivers know where you can find the cheaper shopping options.
My Diver was Mr.Wayan (Mobile: +62 813-3797-9449). He is pretty cool and friendly man. His Toyota Avanza (smaller version of Innova) is clean. He is professional, respects his job and drives very carefully. He was also our official photographer. I strongly recommend him. You can ask your travel agent for him or you can make a whatsapp call to him if you are booking trip on your own.
TRAVEL TOOGLE:
Last but not least, Anjali from Travel Toogle planned and co-ordinated so good that I didn’t have to call them, not even once during my trip. Both the hotels were nice. Everything was smooth like butter and moved according the itinerary. That was undoubtedly a fantastic job. I strongly recommend Travel Toogle to everyone who visits Bali.
Thank you Travel Toogle for such a wonderful planning and such a beautiful trip.
TRAVEL TRIANGLE:
Faruque was responsive when I needed a help with Forex, even at night 9:30pm. I appreciate that. Hope best part is yet to come to Travel Triangle.
