Places To see


Valley Sightseeing
There are three main sites for sightseeing: Chandanwari, Aru Valley and Betaab Valley, named so because it is said that the Bollywood movie, Betaab, was shot here. All three valleys offer spectacular views of the surrounding mountains and their snow-capped peaks.
Tip: Be aware that you can just take local taxis from Pahalgam and taxis from Srinagar or Jammu are now allowed. The rate for the round journey is fixed and there is no bargaining.

Tulian Lake
Located at 4000 m above sea level, the lake is situated near the Aru valley. Apart from taking hired ponies, you can also take a two day trek to reach the lake. The water body remains frozen most months of the year.


Things To Do


Pony rides
Pony rides take you to a scenic meadow named Baisaran, also called the Mini Switzerland. Be sure to put your bargaining skills to test for the pony ride. Be sure to carry food and water along with you.

White water rafting
Pahalgam attracts the visitors who love adventure activities. One of the most popular activity here is white water rafting on the Lidder River. Each trip is for 30 minutes and covers 3 kms approximately. Each raft takes six passengers along with two rafting guides. Helmets and life jackets are provided.
Tip: The best season for rafting is from May to August.

Sri Amarnath Ji
The holy Amarnath Cave is located about 144 kms east to Srinagar and is one of the most important pilgrimage sites in India. The main claim to fame is the natural ice form of the shivalinga. On the full moon day, the lingam is about 6 ft high. According to mythological beliefs, it was here in the Amarnath caves that Lord Shiva revealed the secret of creation to his consort Parvati. The pilgrim starts from Pahalgam and takes three days.
Tip: The yatra usually takes place in June and July; however, the exact dates are announced every year.

Chandanwari
Located at a height of 2923 m above sea level, Chandanwari is about 16 km from Pahalgam. Apart from taking in the awe-inspiring views of the snow-clad Himalayan Mountains, you can see a snow covered bridge and icy glaciers. Chandanwari is also the start point for Amarnath Ji.

Panchtarni
Panch means five and the place is named Panchratni because it is located at a confluence of five streams, near the Sheshnag Lake in Amarnath. Panchratni is the last stoppage for pilgrims heading to Amarnath Ji. A 6 kms narrow path leads to the Amarthnath cave.

Fishing
Pahalgam is a popular destination for the anglers. Permission for fishing in Lidder River can be taken from the Directorate of Fisheries, Tourist Reception Center, Srinagar. The Sheshnag stream is also famous for its trout population.
Tip: The permit allows you to catch a maximum of six fishes per day and is valid for three days. The best time for fishing is from April to September.

Golfing
Pahalgam also has an18-hole course, resting at an elevation of 2400 m above sea level. You can play against rolling green hills and deodar forests. Facilities at the golf course include gold caddies and golf clubs. A nominal fee is charged at hourly basis.
