About Daman

Daman is a small area located between the State of Maharashtra, Gujarat and the Arabian sea. Daman possesses a rich cultural heritage. The history of Daman dates back to 2000 years and has witnessed various rulers, conquests and surrenders. The Portugeseobserved this port in the 16th century and acquired it from the Shahs.
Daman exhibits a salubrious climate throughout and comprises of \casuarina windbreaks, quiet sea shores, exquisite beaches andeasy availability of liquor. The place also attracts history students and enthusiasts owing to the distinctly visiblePortugese influence. The beaches and religious areas in Daman are a spirited combination of silver talcum sands,  stretches of palm groves and ancient monuments. On all the festive occasions the locals decorate the parks throughout and celebrateall the major events with great fun and gusto. The leather products, bamboo mats and baskets are extremely enticing forshopping freaks. The handmade articles are also worth buying.
CONNECTIVITY TO DAMAN:
Nearest railhead is Vapi in the Konkan line and is 12 km away. Mumbai is the nearest international airport which is 190 km away. Regular bus services are available freely to and from Daman.
ATTRACTIONS:Diu Fort is an attarctive and commanding edifice located on right at the shorelines. It was built during 1535-41 AD the fort is a witness to the strategic partnership for defence between the Portugese and the Sultan of Gujarat. It presently houses the Du Jail and a huge light house. The fort is embraced on the three sides by the sea and is connected through a canal from the fourth side. The cannons still remain majestic and keep a look out through the firing holes.
The old St. Thomas Church has been converted into a museum and exhibits idols, wooden carvings, statues and other artifactsacquired from innumerous sources. The museum hosts a wide collection of Catholic statues. The museum is adorned by thestone remnants of a Jain temple.
Lighthouse is considered a major landmark and was meant to provide a ready guidance to all the inbound and outbound sea traffic.
Parikota fort can be approached through a boat ride. It is a marvellous structure made out of stone. It houses a light house andChapel of the 'Our lady of the Sea'.
Nani Daman has interesting sites like Fort of St. Jerome. The most notable attraction is the giant gateway facing the river with alarge statue of St. Jerome. The main building is the church of our Lady of the Sea. The church has a magnificent altar withsuperb panelling. The fortifications provide a fascinating view of the fish market below and the armada of fishing boats neatly anchored alongside. The Jain temple towards north has inside walls covered with glassed murals.
Chakratirth beach assumes name from the ancient scripts that suggest the story of the demon Jailander killing by Lord Vishnu. who used a Sudarshan Chakra for his destruction.
Devka beach is unspoilt and unadulterated and there are stretches of white sand on the Devka beach located about 3 km from Nani Daman. The beach comprises of an amusement park for children and youth.
Gomatimala beach is located 25km from the city of Diu and has a vast stretch of white sandy beach and offers an opportunityto relax in the sun and sand. It is destressing to watch the swinging of palm trees in a tranqill atmosphere.
Jalandhar beach offers a calm and tranquill atmosphere with clean waters and is bereft of the usual hustle and bustle associatedwith any sunshine beach. A small memorial is located at one of the hills near to the beach containing a stone face of demon Jalandhar.
Jampore Beach is located at the end of Daman and Diu Sea and the shades of Casuarina groves are ideal for picnic. The water isconsidered safe for swimming.
Nagoa beach is located 5 km from the town and the shore is horse shoe shaped. The beach is delightful surrounded bydense coconut groves. The stretch of the beach 2. 5 km is extremely clean and minimal rocks and undercurrents makes thebeach safe for swimming.
