Dandeli is an exotic and exuberant town in the Uttara Kannada district of Karnataka. The place is situated by the Kali River with Western Ghats on the other side. Dandeli is steadily developing as a famous hill station and offers an amazing mix of natural scenery, wildlife and adventure sports.
The name is coined after a person named Dandelappa who served as a servant in the household of Mirashi landlords and lost his life for it. Consequently he is being worshipped in temples and people hold him in high esteem.
Dandeli is covered by thick and dense forests all around. The place offers a host of adventure sports including trekking, mountain biking, cycling, river rafting, canoeing and kayaking.
CONNECTIVITY TO DANDELI:
Nearest railhead is at Alnavar which is 35km away from Dandeli. The nearest airport is at Belgaum which is 90 km away. State owned bus services connect Dandeli with Alnavar (35 km), Dharwad (55 km), Hubli (72 km) and Belgaum (90 km).
ATTRACTIONS IN DANDELI:
Kavala caves are limestone caves and located at a distance of nearly 25 km from Dandeli. In order to reach the entrance one has to climb 375 steps. Next they have to crawl down 40ft deep through winding, steep and narrow tunnels to catch a glimpse of the naturally created Shiva linga. It is advisable to carry a torch while going inside the cave. Currently, the caves are inhabited by numerous snakes and bats.
Dimensionally very small, these caves offer a view of the River Kali entering the valley below. The huge stalagmite, worshipped by the local folks as a Lord Shiva Lingam, attracts numerous devotees during Shiva Ratri each year. This place is a must visit for travellers to Dandeli.
-Shiroli Peak is one of the most idyllic tourist spots in the region and is a must-visit on a tour to Dandeli. This point is located at a distance of about 25 km from the city and is within the Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary. It is supposed to be the highest point in the area. The majestic and fantastic Western Ghats are also visible from the Shiroli Peak.
The peak is also called the sunset view point and it provides a delightful view of the peaks located in the Western Ghats. Tourists can also get a beautiful views of the Dandeli Wildlife Sanctuary from this point.
-The Wildlife Sanctuary and the Ansh National Park located close to it cover voluminous areas of dense, deciduous forests. One can visit the place in open jeeps with trained guides and instructors who are meant for acquainting oneself with the rich diversity of the sanctuary.
The place is home to the famous Black Panther and a wide array of animal species include Giant Iguana, Tiger, Leopards, Elephants, Gaur, Malabar Giant Squirrel and many more. The sanctuary also contains about 200 species of birds. One can involve oneself in bird watching while on a safari to the place.
Kulgi Natural camp is meant for lodging while at Dandelia Wild Life sanctuary. The camp is located at a distance of about 12 km from the Dandeli bus stand in Kulgi village. Other tourist activities include nature walking, boating, bird watching, crocodile spotting and angling.
