About Memorial Chorten in Thimphu

Memorial Chorten is perhaps the chief landmark of the city centre of Thimphu. A chorten is a Buddhist Tibetan-style mausoleum erected in the memory of someone. It has a white edifice with golden embellishments and a pagoda-like golden crest at the top. The Memorial Chorten in Thimphu is the tomb consecrated in the loving memory of the Third Druk Gyalpo or the Dragon King, Jigme Dorji Wangchuck after his sudden demise in 1972 while travelling the world. He was the creator of modernised Bhutan and the first instigator of a democratic rule. His contribution to Bhutanese kingdom was immense, and it reflects in the construction of the National Memorial Chorten.

The chorten lies right in the heart of the city of Thimphu, with glimpses of the entire city down the slope and the high eastern Himalayas beyond them. The place is quite crowded in the early mornings as many elderly people come to visit the chorten for a round of morning walk before paying homage to the memorial. Many young people come too, before leaving for school, college or office. However, unlike usual chortens, this does not house Jigme Dorji Wangchuck’s last human remains, but just a photo of him in a ceremonial dress. This is more of a fulfillment of his last wish, which was to build a chorten representing the mind, philosophy, and teaching of Buddha.

Thus, inside the Memorial Chorten of Bhutan, there are ornate mandalas, statues and paintings in reference to Buddhism and Guru Padmasambhava. Each of the chorten’s annexes faces the four cardinal directions. A central wooden column goes right up to the spire, covering all three floors of the chorten. This chorten is of great historical, and spiritual importance to the people of Bhutan and a visit to this place is must, both to see the legendary structure as well as to take in the ambience of the place.

    so very friendly and knowledgeable. They shared with us the history of Bhutan, it's rich cultural heritage and religious significance. Our itinerary was 5 nights long which covered Thimphu, Punakha, Paro returning via Phutenshilong. During our visit, the weather was on our side and we visited all major attractions. We particularly liked the Punakha Dzong, Suspension Bridge, Tiger's nest and Paro cultural museum. The hike to Tiger's nest was the highlight of our trip. All our accomodations were comfortable and the rooms had picturesque views. My wife and I were also celebrating our wedding anniversary. The Green Zone destination team surprised us with a cake and decorated our room. This was a very kind gesture and it made our day all the more special. Additionally, during the trip my mother had forgotten her jacket in one of the hotels we were staying and the Green Zone destination team went out of the way to fetch it and deliver it to us enroute. Overall, we had a wonderful time and have cherished memories of our visit to Bhutan. Kudos to the Green Zone destination team for organising our trip and being on top of everything. I strongly recommend them for Bhutan travel requirements.
