Mehrangarh Fort History

One year after the accession of Rao Jodha – the 15th Rathore ruler – the Mehrangarh fort was built to establish a new capital of Marwar Kingdom. Before Jodhpur, The old fort at Mandore was the capital of the Marwar rulers. The biggest attraction in Jodhpur, this magnificent fort is hard to miss as it is situated on a high hill and is spread over 5 kilometres. Mehrangarh fort invokes an image of the strength and splendor of the Rajput kings of the past and their indomitable will.

Mehrangarh Fort Architecture

Built in Rajputana style, the fort is located in the heart of Jodhpur and it is perched on the top of a hill. Its walls are up to 36 metres in height and 21 metres in width, making it one of the most beautiful forts in Rajasthan. There are seven gates to enter the Mehrangarh Fort including Jai Pol, Fateh Pol, and Lodha Pol.

Today, visiting Mehrangarh fort gives tourists an in-depth idea of these important parts of Jodhpur’s history and impeccable insight into the sordid histories of the area. The best time to visit MehranFort fort, Jodhpur is the winter if you want to stay long and explore it thoroughly but there is also a case to be made for the summer when there are not many tourists around.  

Attractions of Mehrangarh Fort

Mehrangarh Fort stands beautifully on a rocky cliff which is about 150 m high. The fort looks magnificently beautiful when the sun rays fall on it. The most striking feature of this fort is its seven gate entrances, out of which the gate of victory (Jai Pol) is the most prominent one. There are various palaces inside the fort which speaks for themselves because of the intricate carvings and royal design. The Phool Mahal is a major attraction here because of its gold ceilings. Other than this, Moti Mahal, Rang Mahal, and Sheesh Mahal are other important and beautiful palaces inside the fort. Mansions like Ajit Villa, Maan Villa, and Umaid Villa are famous for their intricate ceilings, paintings, musical instruments, and other royal antiques. A part of the fort has been converted into the museum which has all the royal and vintage things.

 There is no light and sound show performed at Mehrangarh Fort at present. However, if you're visiting Jodhpur in February, make sure to attend Rajasthan International Folk Festival (RIFF), which is organized against the majestic backdrop of Mehrangarh Fort.
