About Puri

Puri is credited with one of the most sacred pilgrim centres for Hindus which is Jagannath Puri(Lord of the Universe) and is situated along the coast of Bay of Bengalin Orissa. According to Skanda Purana, Puri is supposed to be the resting place for Lord Vishnu. Puri is a huge repository of art and architecture of Indiaparticularly Orissa. There are three golden triangles in Orissa-Konark, Bhubaneshwar and Puri out of which Puri attracts maximum number of visitors. A major celebration in Puri is Rath Yatra which is celebrated every year. The car festival which is held in June-July is associated with Jagannath Temple and during this time period many Hindu pilgrims visit the temple in order to witness the grand festival. Another festival is the Puri Beach Festival which is conducted in the month ofNovember every year. Puri is turning out to be a major industrial area with industries related to rice milling, handicrafts and fish curing. Puri is a religious place as wellas a holiday attraction. Puri ensures aesthetic blend of rich cultural heritage and traditional Hindu beliefs.
CONNECTIVITY TO PURI:
Puri is a major railway junction and direct train services are available from Puri to other cities in the country. Biju Patnaik Airport is the nearest airport to Puri. Orissa Road Transport Corporation connects Puri to major cities in Orissa.
ATTRACTIONS IN PURI:
Chilika Lake is a major tourist attraction located 50 km from Puri. There are three jetties running to Chilika Lake one by Orissa Tourism Development Corporation and other by private operators. The lake is a hub of many amazing migratory birds. One can view sunrise as well as sunset here.  One can look out for water sports activities, at the water sports complex at Barakul, like boating and fishing here in this lake. The fish fauna, crabs, prawns and mackerel provides nice scenery for the visitors.
Markandeshwara Temple is constructed in 13th century and is placed near Bindu Sagar. The front of the temple is adorned with a Chaitya window displaying a figureof Natraj with 10 arms. The intricately carved images of Goddess Parvati, Lord Muruga and Sri Ganesh are placed in the main sanctum. The corner areas are carved with varied forms of Lord Shiva.
The Narendra Tank is one of the largest tanks in Orissa in which the famed Chandana Yatra of Lord Jagannath known as Chandra Pushkarni is celebrated annually.
At Puri beach one can have a glimpse at sunrise and sunset, amazing golden sands and a tranquill atmosphere. The beach is lengthy and wide too. There are variousaccomodations available for visitors coming to the beach. The Puri beach festival celebrated in November attracts many visitors. The festival includesroad shows, fashion shows, shopping facilities and many other fun related activities.
Swargdwar implying door to heaven is a secluded beach and a holy place in Puri. Legends claim that this was a bathing place for Sri Chaitanyadev who attainedstate of Brahma here. The place is attracted by many Hindu pilgrims and they take bath at a spot called 'Mahadadhi'.
Sri Jagannath Temple one of the most magnificent temples of Orissa was built by a famous king of Ganga Dynasty named Ananda Verman Chodaganga Dev. The beautiful templehouses Lord Jagannath, Devi Subhadra and Balabhadra. The main temple is built in Kalinga architecture.
The other two significant temples are dedicated to Lord Ganesha and Goddess Laxmi. A nearby attraction to Ganesh Temple is Kapalamochana, a small shrine of Lord Shiva at Puri.
