Pangong Tso lake in Ladakh

Pangong Tso translated as "high grassland lake" in Tibetan is a spectacular lake in the Himalayas situated at a height of about 4,350 m and 134 km long. The colour of Pangong Tso Lake changes to the different shades of blue, green and an unusual red. Pangong Tso is an endorheic lake because the water flow is terminated before reaching the ocean hence the minerals and salts are retained in this lake. Since there is no way for salt outflow, the water in the lake is salty. But during winter from November to March, the lake freezes completely even though it is a saline lake. So the best time to visit this dazzling lake is during summer between June and October.

Due to the presence of less fresh water in the lake, vegetation in this lake is very low. There are no fish or other aquatic life in the lake. Only some crust oceans such as shrimps live in this lake. This lake has many migrating birds coming here for breeding. The Bar-headed goose and Brahmini ducks are mostly seen here during summer which is visual treat for tourists. Some of the wildlife species living in this lake are kiang and the Marmot. Pangong Lake is a disputed territory. Only one third of the lake is in India. The remaining two third of the lake is in Tibet which is controlled by China. The Line of Actual Control passes through the lake. Chine controls the 20 km from the Line of Actual Control which is claimed by India. The western end also remains as a dispute area between India and Pakistan.

This lake is a five hours drive from Leh in Ladakh of Jammu and Kashmir. The road to Pangong Tso Lake Ladakh lies at an altitude of 17,352 feet above sea level. This road trip is enjoyed by all hard core adventure lovers. After a tough drive of 5 hours, the stunning beauty of this lake will make all forget about the hardship experienced. The climax scene of 3 idiots, Mani Ratnam's Dil Se song ‘Satrangi Re’ and many other popular film scenes and songs are shot in this incredible location for its scenic beauty. Accommodation near Pangong Lake is very less and costly. Hence camping is mostly preferred by the visiting adventure seekers. The lake’s colour changing property, adventurous location and peaceful atmosphere are the highlights of this water miracle which attracts many people around the world. This serene lake with unbelievable magic is a must-see destination for any travel lover.
