About Munnar

The breathtaking vision of rugged rocks and rippled topography, Munnar is the perfect holiday destination for nature lovers. Endowed with some of the best natural wonderments, people craving for some fresh breath of air and spectacular lush views must definitely visit this city. The Anamudi Peach which lies to the interior of the Eravikulam National Park must be visited by the tourists. The scenic waterfalls, echo point, forest rose garden and the widely spread tea gardens will definitely make your heart skip a beat. One can also spend some good time visiting the lakes and the wildlife sanctuaries in Munnar. With a lot to see and do, this is one of the most visited tourist destinations of Kerala.

Places To See

Mattupetti Indo-Swiss Farm
The farm is better known as Mattupetti (cattle village) because the Tamil migrant laborers had once reared cattle here. The cool climate and the easy availability of fodder made it the perfect location for setting up the Indo-Swiss dairy farm, which is managed by the Kerala Livestock Development Board (KLDB). It is famous for its kind with more than 100 varieties of high-yielding cattle being reared.
Tip: Beyond a point, tourists are not allowed inside the farm.

Echo Point
Located about 15 km from Munnar, Echo Point is a small lake set amidst rolling hills. The lake got its name from the echo that is created here – call out something loudly from a place in the lake embankment and you will hear the sound return from the surrounding hills.

Mattupetti Dam
Located about 10 km from Munnar, the dam is a popular picnic spot. Here, you can indulge in a range of activities such as boating and horse riding. Besides, you can also enjoy a speed boat ride. The 15 minutes ride costs about Rs 300.
Tip: A speed boat can carry five people at a time and so you can save money if you go in a group.

Atukkad Waterfalls
Set amidst hills and jungles, Atukkad waterfalls are one of the most famous attractions of Munnar. The waterfalls are located about 5 km from Munnar on Kochi Road. The sight of water cascading over the rocks, and creating its own music, calms the nerves. You can also enjoy a picnic at this scenic spot.
Tip: The road leading to the waterfall is rough and narrow, which means that driving to the waterfall can be a bit difficult.

Eravikulam (Rajamalai) National Park
A 45 minutes drive will lead you to the Eravikulam (Rajamalai) National Park. The park plays home to a host of endangered species. It is spread across 97 square kilometers and houses mountain goats, Atlas moth (largest in the world), lion-tailed macaque, leopards, and tigers. The Kurichi or Neelakurinji Flowers turn the hills of Rajamalai blue every 12 years. The next bloom will be in 2018.
Tip: It is advisable to reach the counter to buy tickets before 8. 30 am in the morning. Otherwise the queues can vet very long and it may take you a couple of hours to buy them.

Anamudi Peak
The peak is located inside Eravikulam National Park and is the highest peak (2, 695 m) south of the Himalayas. The peak is the largest of its kind in the world and houses rare species of fauna including Nilgiri Langur, the lion-tailed macaque, leopards, tigers.
Tip: The peak is an ideal place for trekking. Visitors are allowed to trek up to 2 kms from Anamudi. However, you need to first take special permission from the state forest department.

Walk in the Clouds
The name of the trek says it all. The trek literally makes you feel like you are walking amidst the clouds. Experience the magic and be transported to another world as you feel the clouds slowly descend upon you.

Adventure activities
If you are an adventure junkie, there is much in store for you in Munnar, from rock climbing and rappelling to rock climbing, hiking and biking. There are several tour operators in the town that offer these adventure activities. The package usually includes camping, food, transport and gear.

Munnar Elephant Safari
The elephant safari takes you through misty forests, deep valleys, and rugged hill paths located in the heart of Munnar forests. The safari is a great way to enjoy the peace of the jungle, and if you are lucky enough, you might see some rare animals and birds as well.
Tip: You can choose from one hour package, half day and one day tours. The safari will also include features such as elephant bathing and feeding, timber dragging demonstrations and displays of elephant commands and communication.

There are several boating options available in Munnar. You can choose from paddle boats, speed boats to Kashmiri-Shikara. The 'Kashmiri-Shikara' boat ride is especially popular with the honeymooners.

There is no better way to experience the beautiful hills and valleys than by biking on the stunning trails of the hill station. A biking trail that is especially popular with the bikers is the one that takes you through a tea estate, Madupatty, around 14 km from Munnar.

Munnar Supply Association (MSA)
Set up in 1900, the MSA is the nostalgic landmark of Munnar. It is the oldest department store in the area. Even though the store retains its old world charm it has re-invented itself to meet the needs of the present day tourists. This 102 years old store boasts a red brick, red tiled building and has gables, buttresses and a porch. The store is now a heritage site.
