About Kodaikanal

Kodaikanal is one of the most charming and exquisite hill stations in India. It is situated near Madurai in Tamil Nadu. The word Kodaikanal means gift of the forest as per local language. The exquisite beauty entails enchanting cascades, gurgling streams and wide varieties of flora and fauna. With its lush green pastures and lovely breeze and exquisite locales, Kodaikanal is an extremely enticing hill station to watch out for. A peculiar feature of Kodaikanal is the unique flowering plant Kurunji which last bloomed in 2004 and is Nature's gift to Kodaikanal. This particular hill station is flocked by a swarm of tourists every year owing to its unique ambience. Kodai is situated at a height of 2133m and covers an area of 21. 45 sq km. It is famous for educational institutes of international repute.

Places To See

Berijam Lake
One of the three most pristine lakes in Kodaikanal, the lake is a plastic free zone and is located in the reserved forest region. The lake is used to provide drinking water and so no water activity is permitted. The drive to the lake is more scenic than the lake itself.
Tip: You need to get permission to visit the lake from the forest department. Usually, the person who arranges the vehicle also arranges for the pass.

Chettiar Park
The park is abundant in beauty with well-defined pathways and well-arranged flower beds, presenting a riot of colourful flowers. There is a separate area for reclining back and taking in the scenic surrounds. The park also has a separate play area for kids.

Coakers Walk
The place is great to enjoy the sun rise and catch the sight of scenic valleys. If you visit before noon in winter, you will be able to see mesmerizing clouds beneath you, forming a white ocean like scene. There is also a telescope near the main gate.

Bryant Park
The park is set near the lake and is about ten minutes walk from the boat club. The park is huge and nicely maintained. During summers, flower shows are held here.

Kodai Lake
You can go boating here. Walking around this star-shaped water body is another activity that will leave you mesmerized.
Tip: At night some places around the lake can get very dark so it is good to be cautious. The best time to walk is from 6 to 7 pm.

Kurinjiandavar Temple
A 4 km drive from the lake will bring you to the temple whose presiding God is Lord Muruga. The main highlight are the flowers inside which bloom once in 12 years. In summers, you can also enjoy the view of the Palani Hills and the Kodaikanal Town from this temple. In winters, the visibility is low and so the views are blocked.

Green Valley View/Suicide Point
There is a drop of more than 5000 ft at this point. Apparently, the place is named Suicide Point to prevent people from being lured to commit suicide. You can also visit the Green Valley Point and Pillar Rocks in this area.

Devil's Kitchen
The cave is located at a short distance from Pillar Rocks. You will need to keep a watch out for deep hidden ravines – what would normally appear like dark gutters are actually a steep fall. Many unsuspecting people have fallen in this trap and that is why this area is known as the devil’s trap.

Guna Caves
The cave is named after a movie by the same name which was shot here. It is very steep and risky to get in and so people these days are not allowed to enter into the cave. However, you can take pictures from a distance.

Pine Forest
The forest is located on the way to the Guna cave. You can go a little deep into the forest and soak up the tranquil surroundings and the sound of the chirruping birds. The place also presents numerous photo opportunities.

Silver Cascade
The waterfall is located about 5 kms from Kodaikanal. The water from the fall then flows through the nearby eucalyptus trees. A dip in the cold, refreshing water is highly recommended.

Old Suicide Point
You will come across this place about 5 minutes before the pine forest. You will need to get off from the main road and take a pathway that leads towards the sheer cliff. The views from here are simply spectacular.
