The process started with single-use plastic consumption and eliminating the use of plastic in food packaging, bottles, grocery bags, cups, containers and cutlery. Delhi’s IGI Airport Becomes Plastic Free
The busiest airport in India and also rated among the best airports in India around the world is setting an example yet again by aiming to become plastic free by the end of 2019. The Indira Gandhi International Airport of Delhi does not fail to disappoint us as it approaches a good initiative to eliminate all single-use plastic at the airport.
Delhi International Airport Limited (DIAL) has said that the initiative is in line with India’s pledge to eliminate all single-use plastic in the country by 2022. It aims to ensure a smart and bio-friendly packaging for retail shopping and engage key stakeholder groups to increase awareness about the same.
First Plastic Free Airport In India
The Indira Gandhi International Airport is ready to set another example by becoming the first plastic-free airport in the country. The airport aims to reduce the disposable plastic waste over the course of five months and discarding plastic grocery bags, food packaging, bottles, straws, cups and other plastic products.
The airport authorities have already taken up initiatives to reduce overall waste generation through recycling and waste segregation. IGI airport has also installed blue and green bins for biodegradable and non-biodegradable waste respectively.
The airport authorities mainly aim to create awareness, enhancing waste management systems and promoting the use of eco-friendly sustainable alternatives progressively.

Other Airports In India Taking Up The Initiative
The Bengaluru International Airport Ltd (BIAL), operators of Kempegowda International Airport, have also taken up several initiatives, one of them is to follow the sustainable approach towards building a healthy environment by eliminating single-use plastic. The Bengaluru airport has applied this rule in all its four lounges, food outlets and a day hotel that have taken stringent measures to reduce dependency on plastics. This is being implemented well by reducing the use of plastic, the initial steps include eliminating the use of straws, coffee stirrers, plastic knives, food wrappers, cheese and butter wraps and packaged snacks.

What Are Single-Use Plastic Items?
Single-use plastic items or disposable plastics are the plastic items that are used only once before they are thrown away or recycled. These items include things like plastic bags, straws, coffee stirrers, soda and water bottles and most food packaging materials. These are disposable plastics that travellers or passengers use for packaging their bags and the staff generally use for packaging items sold at airport stores.

The airport authorities have taken efforts to reduce the overall waste generation through recycling and waste segregation.
