With our holiday package for Sikkim, travellers can explore popular attractions in such as Gangtok, Nathu La, and Yumthang Valley.

Best Time to Book Holidays in Sikkim

The best time to visit the state of Sikkim is spring and summer season. From March through early May, the weather in Sikkim is mostly clear and the temperatures are pleasant for sightseeing. Another ideal time to book our Sikkim trip packages is between October and mid-December. This fall season or post-monsoon season in Sikkim is also the best time to indulge in adventure sports such as trekking and skiing.

With the onset of winter season, tourist footfall in Gangtok and other places in Sikkim decreases. Aside from New Year and Christmas holidays, winter is generally considered an offseason for Sikkim tourism. As the snow starts to melt in the higher elevations, the life awakens in the form of flowers at beautiful valleys in Sikkim. Spring months in Sikkim bring back the tourist crowd from all over the world. During this time, rafting, paragliding, and trekking are popular activities in Sikkim.

The summer months, from April to June, are the best time to plan a visit to Gurudongmar Lake, Yumthang Valley, and Nathula Pass. Monsoon season arrives early in the Northeast so beware of heavy rainfall and landslides between late June and early September. It is not advisable to book tour packages for Sikkim in the monsoon season to remote areas due to the threat of downpour and torrential rains.

How to Reach Sikkim?

The state is accessible from all major cities in India by train and by air. There are direct trains from major junctions in India to reach Sikkim. The nearest train station from Gangtok is located in New Jalpaiguri in West Bengal. From there tourists can board a bus or hire local taxis to visit Sikkim.

For inter-state travel, Gangtok acts as the base to explore remoter regions such as Yuksom, Pelling, and Yumthang Valley in North Sikkim. Here the following various modes to plan a trip to Sikkim:

By Air:

The newly-opened Pakyong Airport (PYG) is located about 35 kilometres south of the state capital Gangtok. At the moment, SpiceJet offers direct flights from Guwahati and Kolkata to this airport in Sikkim. It takes less than 90 minutes to reach Kolkata to Sikkim Airport by nonstop flight. The secondary airport to travel to Sikkim is Bagdogra Airport (IXB) near Siliguri. It lies about 125 km from the state capital and is approachable via taxi or bus in about three hours. Bagdogra Airport is directly connected with Delhi and Kolkata by nonstop flights.

By Road:

The state is accessible from northern areas of West Bengal. Destinations such as Darjeeling, Kalimpong, and Siliguri are directly connected via public transport and private taxis to Gangtok and other places in Sikkim. It is not advisable to travel by road to Sikkim during the monsoon season as landslides and torrential rains often block road network. Tourists can reach Gangtok in 1 hour from the nearest PYG Airport. And, it may take up to three hours to reach Gangtok from New Jalpaiguri Train Station.

By Rail:

Currently, the state of Sikkim does not have any train connectivity. The nearest broad-gauge station is in West Bengal’s New Jalpaiguri (near Siliguri), which is a three-hour drive from Gangtok. New Jalpaiguri station lies on major train routes from metro cities in India including Kolkata and Delhi. Shared taxis or public buses regularly run between Gangtok and New Jalpaiguri for travellers.

From Yumthang to Yuksom: Explore Sikkim’s Top Tourist Spots

With the customizable itinerary of our Sikkim Darjeeling Gangtok tour packages, tourists can cover major travel destinations in the state. Overall, the state has four districts or divisions: North Sikkim, East Sikkim, South Sikkim, and West Sikkim.

  • Gangtok: With only 29,000 inhabitants, the capital of Sikkim is situated at a mean elevation of 1,780 metres (5,800 feet). Compared with other state capitals in India, it's a relatively laidback and free from the hubbub that is common in India's many overpopulated cities. For the out-of-state travellers, the most appealing feature of Gangtok lies in its proximity to marvellous mountain vistas including the great Kanchenjunga Peak. Ideally, with our Sikkim tour itinerary, tourists can spend a day or two in the state capital to enjoy local sightseeing and prepare further plans like organizing permits and trekking arrangements to nearby destinations. One of the top places in Gangtok, Namgyal Institute of Tibetology displays a monumental collection of Tibetan and Lepcha manuscripts, as well as Buddhist statues, icons, thangkas, musical instruments, jewellery, incense burners, and beautiful scrolls. Among other attractions, Do-Drul Chorten is a lovely whitewashed Buddhist stupa, surrounded by prayer wheels. Enchey Monastery and the Flower Exhibition Centre near White Hall also attract a good number of tourists.
  • Pelling: Treated by tourists as a stopover, Pelling is mostly visited by adventure seekers headed for Yuksom, Dzongri, and other high-altitude destinations in West Sikkim. This small hill town is located at an elevation of 2,150 metres and thereby allows unobstructed views of the Himalayas. Bathed in alpine flora, the region remains a wonderful offbeat destination worth exploring with our well-crafted Sikkim travel packages. Besides hiking or sunrise views, the nearby monasteries such as Pemayangtse and Tashiding Monastery are popular places.
  • Tsomgo Lake: With a surface elevation of 3,753 metres, Tsongmo Lake or Changu Lake is one of the top draws of Sikkim tourism. With a distance of about 40 km from Gangtok, this alpine lake lies on the Nathula Pass road. Formed in an oval shape, the lake is about 836 metres long and 427 metres wide. Tourists at this beautiful glacial lake can enjoy pony and yak rides in Sikkim.
  • Yumthang Valley: Located in North Sikkim, this stunning valley is famous for its wonderful variety of flora which blooms in the spring season. Renowned for lovely meadows, hot springs, gurgling river, and a breathtaking backdrop of the Himalayas, it is about 150 km away from Gangtok. Locally known as the Valley of Flowers, it remains out of bounds in the winter season due to heavy snowfall. Trekking and skiing can be enjoyed in the warmer months. The Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary is the main attraction to explore the Yumthang Valley.
  • Buddhist Monasteries: The state is home to nearly 200 monasteries belonging to the two orders of Buddhism, Nyingma and Kagyu order. Rumtek Monastery, located 24 km from Gangtok, is regarded as the richest Buddhist centre in India for displaying unique religious artifacts and manuscripts. The most significant part of the complex is the 4-m-tall Golden Stupa embedded with jewels. Lachen Monastery, Phodang Monastery, Khecheopalri Monastery, Enchey Monastery, and Ralang Monastery are worth visiting to watch the fluttering of prayer flags.

Top Things to Do in Sikkim:

Some travellers visit Sikkim simply to enjoy the views of the Himalayas and breathe clean air, but most flock here to discover hidden monasteries, explore the treks in western Sikkim, and learn about local heritage. Things to do in Sikkim range from laid-back experiences like yak rides for couples and families to outdoor thrills like trekking for adventure junkies.

  • Trekking: West Sikkim is particularly known for popular treks around the third highest mountain peak in the world. From day hikes to up to 10-day treks to higher elevations, there are trails passing through alpine forests, glacial lakes, and rolling meadows. There isn’t a more rewarding trek in Sikkim than Goecha La Trek that allows magnificent views of not only Kanchenjunga but at least 10 more Himalayan summits. Rhododendron Trek and Dzongri Trek start from Yuksom, which is the main base camp for several high-altitude treks in Sikkim. Keep in mind that a permit is required for tourists to enjoy trekking in Sikkim.
  • Paragliding: Take the exciting bird’s-eye view of Sikkim’s landscape to make your holidays in Sikkim memorable. Summer months from March through early June, when the weather and air is warmer, is the ideal time to enjoy this activity with your family and friends.
  • River Rafting: There is no better joy to conquer the white rapids of the Teesta River in Sikkim. The stretch of the river from Makha to Sirwani and onward to Bardang is popular for Grade 3 and Grade 4. Post monsoon season is the ideal time to enjoy this adventurous journey. The Rangit River is another water body to enjoy rafting with our Sikkim holiday packages.
  • Cable Car Ride: Gondola rides in Gangtok is a wonderful experience to take the aerial tour of the city. There are three major terminals in the city. Deorali Market, Nam Nang, and Tashiling are the three points to board a cable car. It’s an ideal way to spend time with your partner and kids.
  • Yak Rides: Tsomgo Lake is the place to be to take 30-min yak rides in Sikkim. Located en route to Nathula Pass, this high-altitude lake is thronged by tourists willing to ride yaks decorated with woollens and bells. Tourists can also hire yaks to visit high-altitude treks such as Dzongri in West Sikkim.

  • Trip to Sikkim - Gangtok - Darjeeling

Excellent! It was a very good experience with Tharingsa Holidays with whom we got connected through Travel Triangle. With a group of 6 and the tour being planned only for 2 days and 2 nights, we had no clue regarding the connectivity and possible no. of explorations within the given time frame as we were first time travelers to Sikkim. Credit goes to Tharingsa Team especially Tour Co-coordinator Ms. Sushmita, who patiently listened, understood and accordingly planned the itinerary to our expectations. Receiving from Bagdogra airport, river rafting in Kalimpong, sightseeing in Tsango Lake, Baba Mandir, Nathula on the next day till dropping back on Airport was so well co-ordinated and executed that we didn't give a second thought for a single moment. Honestly this was one of the reason that our group could enjoy to the maximum in the short duration. Would like to suggest to the first time travelers or even to frequent travel freaks, if you want to enjoy to the fullest and keep aside headaches for travelling arrangements. Go for Tharingsha Holidays! Thank you Travel Triangle! Keep up the good work ! :-)

All the staff including manager is so polite. Car provided us its also good, Manasarovar kept their promised by providing Xylo and Innova as per our desire. Drivers are also very polite and their behaviour is also good. At the end of the tour we had drop at Bagdogra Airport, our flight timing was 5pm, we planned to start from Gangtok at 10:30am for airport but they forced us to leave at 8:35am. While we requested repeatedly that we have 5years old kid, they were giving excuse if election. Even driver threatened us to cancel the car if we won't get ready by 8:30am. There were no problem in Sikkim during election, tourists were went for sight seeing and all. Its a peaceful state. We reached at Airport at 1:20pm. After reaching at airport we get to know that car driver had pick up from Airport at 1:30pm to 2pm.

Overall it was fine.. this could have been an awesome trip, had i not wasted my time in visiting yumthang valley in lachung which is closed to visit for more than 2 months still the tour operator put that in my itenary. I would have scheduled some other location if would have been aware of this earlier. Baba Mandir and changu lake was the best thing to be visited.

  • Trip to Sikkim - Gangtok - Darjeeling

Hotel at Lachung was not good and infact hotel was changed which I realised at the time of checkout Because the reason is the name of the hotel is near about same My booked hotel was Delight Royal lachung Heritage And I was offered Delight Royal Lachung hotel. This hotel is very bad,the room was allotted to me was very narrow there were a partition with wooden ply. They were not giving room service .After argument and fight they give me bigger room but yet it was not so impressive. I have called Tour angle to tell about room condition then they replied that this property is little bit poor thats why he iwas not offering this hotel. But as i have selected this hotel I have to bare. It seems like I have selected this hotel that's why this was my fault there was no role of tour angle . And tour manager is very poor in folloup. Other hotel drivers all were good I suggest to travell agent that atleast inform to your customer about time schedule for travell. As last day of itinerary was not covered by me because I have to catch my flight. If I know the timing I was able to do that places also.
