Day 1: Arrive in Shimla, Excursion to Kufri

Your trip begins at Shimla railway station, the top of the narrow-gauge Kalka to Shimla line that climbs through more than a hundred tunnels to reach the town. Our representative meets you and transfers you to the hotel. After you check in and freshen up, you head out to Kufri, about 16 kilometres away at roughly 2,720 metres. The afternoon takes in the Himalayan Nature Park with its mini zoo, the Fun World amusement park and Mahasu Peak, the highest point around Kufri, with a stop at the Green Valley viewpoint where the road opens onto a thickly forested drop. In winter, from about late December, Kufri's slopes turn into one of the region's few ski and ice-skating spots, so a snow day is a real possibility on this trip. Day 2: Shimla Local Sightseeing

After breakfast you spend the day on foot and by cab around Shimla. The circuit covers the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, housed in the grand Viceregal Lodge (Rashtrapati Niwas), the neo-Gothic Christ Church that stands on The Ridge among the oldest churches in North India, and the open promenade of The Ridge itself, which runs into Scandal Point and Mall Road. There is time for the temples too: Kali Bari, Sankat Mochan, and a climb or a short drive up to Jakhoo Temple, the Hanuman shrine on Jakhoo Hill that is the highest point in Shimla at about 2,455 metres. The afternoon is free for shopping through Lakkar Bazar and the Lower Bazar, known for wooden crafts, woollens and hot street food, before dinner and an overnight stay at the hotel. Day 3: Day Trip to Naldehra and Tara Devi

Today you drive out to Naldehra, about 22 kilometres from Shimla at around 2,044 metres, laid out around one of the oldest golf courses in India on a cedar-covered ridge. You can play a round on the greens, take a pony ride, or simply walk the tree line for the valley views. On the way back many travellers stop at the Tara Devi Temple, set on its own hill on the Shimla to Kalka road, for the quiet and the long view over the valley. If you would rather stay closer to town, Mashobra and Craignano make an easy alternative afternoon of orchards and forest walks. Day 4: Departure from Shimla

After breakfast you pack up and check out. Our representative transfers you to Shimla railway station, where the trip ends and your journey home begins. If your onward train or drive is later in the day, there is usually time for a final walk on Mall Road or a last cup of tea on The Ridge before you leave. (Meals: breakfast)

How to Reach Shimla

Shimla sits at about 2,200 metres and is reached most easily from Delhi or Chandigarh. The road from Delhi covers roughly 343 kilometres and takes seven to eight hours through Chandigarh and Kalka. From Chandigarh itself it is about 113 kilometres and three and a half to four hours by cab. The most memorable arrival is by rail: broad-gauge trains run to Kalka, about 90 kilometres from Shimla, where you change to the narrow-gauge Kalka to Shimla toy train, a UNESCO World Heritage line that winds up through more than a hundred tunnels in five to six hours. Shimla's own airport at Jubbarhatti, about 23 kilometres out, has very limited service, so most air travellers fly into Chandigarh and drive up.

Best Time to Visit Shimla

March to June is the popular window. Days are pleasant, roughly 15 to 30 degrees, which suits the full sightseeing pace of this itinerary and makes a welcome change from the plains. December to February brings snow to Kufri and the higher points, and it is the season to come if you want to try skiing or ice skating, though you should pack heavy woollens and allow for the odd road delay. July to September is the monsoon: greener and cheaper, but with a real chance of landslides on the hill roads, so keep the plan flexible.
