How to Choose the Right Sri Lanka Honeymoon Package

Start with your leave. Four days covers Kandy and a beach and nothing more. With six or seven days you add the Ella train or a safari without spending every afternoon in the car. Nine nights lets you see Sigiriya, the hills, Yala and the south coast at an easy pace.

Then set the budget. Under Rs 25,000 each buys a 3-star 3N/4D or 4N/5D trip. Rs 30,000 to Rs 50,000 gets you 5 to 6 nights in 3 to 4-star hotels. Above that you are paying for 5-star rooms or a Yala safari lodge.

Match the coast to your wedding date. A November to March wedding points west and south, to Bentota, Galle and Mirissa. A May to July wedding points east, to Trincomalee. Ask the agent to swap the beach and the rest of the route stays the same.

Decide what the trip is for. For scenery, pick the Ella train package. For wildlife, choose Yala. If the plan is a pool and the beach, take the 4N/5D with three nights in Bentota.

Sample 7-Day (6N/7D) Sri Lanka Honeymoon Itinerary

This is the route of our bestselling 6N/7D Sri Lanka honeymoon with the Ella train ride, from Rs 35,275 per person with 4-star stays and breakfast every morning.

Day 1, Colombo airport to Kandy (about 105 km, about 3 hours). Your driver meets you at arrivals. Stop at the Pinnawala Elephant Orphanage on the way, then walk Kandy Lake before the evening visit to the Temple of the Tooth Relic.

Day 2, Kandy to Nuwara Eliya (76 km, about 2.5 hours). Spend the morning at the Peradeniya Botanical Garden. The road then climbs through tea estates, and most drivers stop at a tea factory for a tasting. Nights here drop to around 15°C, so pack a light jacket.

Day 3, the train to Ella. Board at Nanu Oya for the roughly 3-hour ride through tea country to Ella. Walk to the Nine Arch Bridge, and if you have energy left, climb Little Adam's Peak for the late-afternoon view. Your cab brings you back to Nuwara Eliya for the night.

Day 4, down to Bentota (about 210 km). It's a long drive, so you leave after breakfast and reach the beach by late afternoon, in time for the sunset.

Day 5, Bentota and Galle. Take a morning boat on the Madu River through the mangroves, then drive an hour south to walk the Galle Fort ramparts at sunset. This is the evening most couples choose for a beach candlelight dinner.

Day 6, Bentota to Colombo (about 1.5 hours). A slow last morning by the sea, then a short drive north. Spend the evening at Galle Face Green or Independence Square.

Day 7, departure. Breakfast, then the transfer to the airport.

The Nanu Oya to Ella train. Three hours of tea slopes, tunnels and open doorways, in reserved seats your agent books for you. Included in the 6N/7D Ella train package.

Sunrise on Sigiriya Rock. The climb is about 1,200 steps. Start at opening time and you're on the summit before the heat and the tour buses. Pidurangala Rock next door gives you the same sunrise with Sigiriya in the frame. Part of the 5N/6D Sigiriya to Bentota package.

Whale watching from Mirissa. Boats leave around 6:30 am from November to April, when blue whales feed off the south coast. Add it to the 6N/7D Habarana to Bentota trip, which already stops in Mirissa.

A Yala jeep safari. Yala has one of the highest leopard densities in the world, and morning drives are your best chance. Built into the Yala jeep safari honeymoon. Yala's main zone (Block 1) usually shuts for about six weeks between early September and mid-October every year, so plan the safari outside that window.

A candlelight dinner on the beach. Bentota and Mirissa resorts set a table on the sand. Packages that list "honeymoon freebies" include extras such as a cake or a flower-decorated bed. On others, ask your agent to quote the dinner as an add-on.

A couple's Ayurveda massage. Many Bentota resorts have their own Ayurveda spa. Book it for the afternoon you arrive from the hills.

The Madu River boat ride. About an hour among mangrove islands, a cinnamon farm and a temple on its own island, 15 minutes from Bentota beach.

Galle Fort at sunset. A walk on the Dutch ramparts as the lighthouse comes on, then dinner inside the fort walls.

The Kandyan dance show. Drummers, fire-walkers and dancers in Kandy every evening, an hour before the temple's evening ritual.

1. Ella

Ella is the last big stop on the hill-country train, about 6 hours from Colombo by road. Couples come for the Nine Arch Bridge, the easy hike up Little Adam's Peak and Ravana Falls just outside town. The wide acres of tea plantations, cloud covers and jungle canopies add to the beauty of a honeymoon holiday.

2. Bentota

Negombo sits right by the airport, but Bentota, about 1.5 hours south of Colombo, is the beach most honeymooners pick. The Bentota river meets the sea here, so you get a calm lagoon on one side and surf on the other. Snorkelling, sailing and the Madu River boat ride are all within 15 minutes, and most of our packages end with two or three nights here.

3. Mirissa

This crescent-shaped beach makes for an extremely romantic beach destination, about 2.5 hours from Colombo on the Southern Expressway. It's the base for whale watching from November to April and for sunsets from Coconut Tree Hill.

4. Nuwara Eliya

Known as the 'Little England' of Sri Lanka, Nuwara Eliya sits at about 1,900 m, 76 km (2.5 hours) beyond Kandy. Couples come for tea-estate visits, a boat on Gregory Lake and colonial-era bungalows with fireplaces.

5. Sigiriya

Also known as Lion Rock, Sigiriya is a fifth-century rock fortress about 4 hours north-east of Colombo. The climb takes about an hour up, past the frescoes and the Lion's Paws. Pidurangala Rock nearby is the quieter sunrise spot, and Minneriya's elephant safaris are 30 minutes away.

6. Galle

Galle Fort is a UNESCO World Heritage Site about 2 hours south of Colombo. This beautiful city can be explored on foot, and the ramparts at sunset are the reason most couples come.

7. Kandy

Kandy is the hill capital and the first night on most of our honeymoon routes, about 3 hours from Colombo. The Temple of the Tooth Relic, Kandy Lake and the Peradeniya Botanical Garden fill a day. The evening Kandyan dance show fills the night.

8. Trincomalee

Trincomalee is the east-coast choice for a May to September honeymoon, about 6 hours from Colombo. The beaches here are relatively quieter as compared to other places in Sri Lanka. The Uppuveli and Nilaveli beaches are perfect for long walks and quiet moments with your partner.

9. Tangalle

Tangalle is for couples who want a beach to themselves, about 3 hours south on the expressway. Mangroves, small coves and boutique villas, with very few crowds.

10. Unawatuna

Unawatuna is a sheltered bay 10 minutes past Galle. The water is calm enough to snorkel straight off the beach in season, and it's an easy add-on to a Galle Fort evening.

Best Time for a Sri Lanka Honeymoon

The best time for a Sri Lanka honeymoon depends on which coast you want. Two monsoons hit opposite sides of the island, so one coast is always dry.

Indian passport holders need a tourist ETA (Electronic Travel Authorisation), which is Sri Lanka's tourist visa. Things couples should know before they go

• Book the Ella train early. Reserved seats open 30 days before travel, and December and January dates go first. Your agent books them once your trip is confirmed.

• Cover shoulders and knees at temples. That goes for both of you, at the Temple of the Tooth and at Dambulla. Shoes come off at the entrance, and you should never pose with your back to a Buddha statue.

• Show no Buddha tattoos. Sri Lanka has turned away visitors with visible Buddha tattoos. Keep them covered.

• Expect slow roads. Sixty kilometres in the hills can take two hours. That's why our routes keep driving days short and put the train in the middle.

• Check the sea before you swim. Red flags mean rip currents, especially on the west coast from May to September.
