Places to Visit in Kashmir for Families

Most family packages are built around Srinagar and one or two hill stations, with the option to add more as your days allow. Gulmarg and Pahalgam work year round and turn into snow destinations in winter, and since the all-weather Z-Morh (Sonamarg) tunnel opened in January 2025, Sonamarg is reachable in winter too. 1. Srinagar

Srinagar is where almost every family trip begins. The Dal Lake shikara ride and a night on a houseboat are the highlights children remember, and the Mughal Gardens (Nishat, Shalimar, Chashme Shahi) and Shankaracharya Hill give you easy, low-effort sightseeing. It is also the best place to try Kashmiri food and shop for pashmina and saffron. Reach it by flight, cab or bus.

2. Gulmarg

Gulmarg, the Meadow of Flowers, is the big draw for families in both seasons. The Gulmarg gondola, one of the highest cable cars in the world, carries you up to Kongdoori and Apharwat for snow play in winter and green meadow views in summer. Ski and snowboard schools run here from December to February. Reach it by cab from Srinagar, about two hours.

3. Pahalgam

About 95 km from Srinagar in the Lidder valley, Pahalgam is the gentle, unhurried stop that suits mixed-age groups. Families come for pony rides, the Betaab and Aru valleys, Chandanwari and easy riverside walks. It is also the base for the Amarnath Yatra. Reach it by cab.

4. Sonmarg

Sonmarg, the Meadow of Gold in the Ganderbal district, is at its best from spring to autumn and a favourite for its snow point at the Thajiwas glacier, reached by a short pony ride the kids love. It sits below peaks like Sirbal and Kolahoi and marks the start of the Zoji La road to Ladakh. Reach it by cab. The Z-Morh tunnel now keeps the road from Srinagar open in winter, though Zoji La beyond Sonmarg still closes after the heavy snow.

5. Leh and Ladakh

Families with older children and more days extend the trip into Ladakh for its lakes and high passes: Pangong, Nubra and the Zanskar valley, with Leh Palace, Shanti Stupa and the Hall of Fame in Leh itself. The best window is April to June and September to October, as most routes close after November. Reach it by flight, cab or bike.

6. Doodhpathri and Yusmarg

These two meadows are the quieter alternatives families are increasingly adding. Doodhpathri, about 40 km from Srinagar, is a grassy valley of streams that makes an easy half-day picnic. Yusmarg, to the south, is a gentle pine-fringed meadow with pony rides and short walks. Both work well when you want open space without the crowds of Gulmarg.

7. Dal Lake and the Mughal Gardens

The Dal Lake is the centre of a Srinagar stay: the shikara ride, the floating gardens and the houseboats. Around it, the Mughal Gardens (Shalimar Bagh, the Garden of Love built by Jahangir, plus Nishat and Chashme Shahi) give families a relaxed few hours by the water. Reach them by local transport or cab.

8. Betaab Valley

Near Pahalgam, between the town and Chandanwari, Betaab Valley took its name from the Bollywood film shot here and is an easy, photogenic stop on the Amarnath route. It is open roughly 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and pairs well with Aru Valley. Reach it by cab or public transport, about 7 km from Pahalgam.
