Himachal Family Tour from Delhi (3N/4D) - At A Glance

Holidaying with family is easiest when the plan does the thinking for you. This 3 nights 4 days Himachal family tour runs from Delhi to Manali and back on an overnight Volvo, so parents are not driving the 570 km each way and the trip is built around what actually works with kids and grandparents: a low-altitude base in Manali, one big snow day at Rohtang and Solang, and a heritage day at Naggar Castle. It is a value plan from Rs 8,500 per person, and every day is customisable..

Manali is the reason this itinerary suits families. The town itself has the Hadimba Devi Temple, the Mall, the Beas riverside and the Tibetan monasteries within easy reach, so even a slow morning has something to do. The higher, weather-dependent stops sit a short drive away, which means you decide each day how far up the mountain the family wants to go.

    Day-by-day family itinerary

Four real days, not a template. Nothing here needs a pre-dawn start you cannot do with children.

Day 1: Overnight Volvo from Delhi, arrive Manali, Hadimba Temple and the Mall

Your family holiday begins in Delhi. The Volvo departs the Delhi Volvo point at 5:30 pm, and the overnight run gets you into Manali the next morning around 7:00 am. You are picked up at the Manali bus station and taken to the hotel to check in and rest. Once everyone has freshened up, the first stop is the Hadimba Devi Temple, a wooden-carved shrine set in the cedar forest of Van Vihar, then the sulphur hot springs at Vashisht, which local belief holds to be medicinal. The rest of the day is a slow walk on the Mall, the Manali market and the Tibetan monasteries, before dinner and an overnight stay at the hotel. Pack enough woollens, especially for the children.

Day 2: Rohtang Pass and Solang Valley, the family snow day

After a hot breakfast you drive up towards Rohtang La, a high pass at 13,050 ft that connects Manali to Lahaul and Spiti. The drive itself is the attraction, past the Gulaba, Kothi and Rahala waterfalls. This is the day for snow: skiing, horse riding, yak riding and a snow-scooter ride are available on the spot at your own cost. When Rohtang itself is closed or the permit day is full, Solang Valley lower down is the family fallback, and it is where the ropeway, zorbing and gentle snow-play sit, so small children still get their snow without the altitude of the pass. Sightseeing up to Gulaba and Solang is subject to weather and availability. Manali to Rohtang is about 52 km and roughly 2 hours each way, so you are back at the hotel for dinner.

Day 3: Naggar Castle, Roerich Gallery and a leisure evening

A gentler day built around heritage. After breakfast you drive to Naggar Castle, a medieval stone and timber structure built in 1460 AD by Raja Jagat Singh and now run as an HPTDC heritage property. It is an easy, low-altitude stop that works for history-minded parents and restless kids alike. In the same village sits the Roerich Art Gallery, the former home of the Russian painter Nicholas Roerich, worth the short walk for the Himalayan canvases and the valley view. On the way you can stop at the Jagatsukh Gayatri Temple and the Indo-Norway Fish Farm by the Beas. Back in Manali the evening is yours; mountain biking and hiking are there if the teenagers want them, at own cost.

Day 4: Shopping morning, overnight Volvo back to Delhi

The last morning is unhurried. Breakfast, then check out around noon and leave the bags in the hotel cloakroom so the family can do a last shopping run for Kullu shawls, caps and wooden handicrafts. In the afternoon you head to the Manali bus stand for the overnight Volvo back to Delhi, and the 3 nights 4 days Himachal family tour ends with the drive home.

How to reach Manali from Delhi

This package uses the overnight Volvo both ways, which is the reason it works for families: no one in the group has to drive the mountain road. The distance is about 570 km and the journey runs roughly 13 hours through the night, so you sleep on the bus and wake near Manali. If you would rather travel by private cab or fly, here is how the options compare.

    From Delhi byTimeNotes
Overnight Volvo (this package)~13 hrs / ~570 kmDeparts Delhi Volvo point 5:30 pm, reaches Manali ~7:00 am. 3 tickets included (2 adults + 1 kid).
Private cab~12 to 14 hrsDoor to door, flexible stops. Better for very young kids or elderly who need breaks. Add-on, not in base price.
Flight + road~1 hr flight + ~1.5 hrs roadFly Delhi to Bhuntar (Kullu), then ~50 km by road to Manali. Fastest but weather-dependent and pricier.

Rohtang permit, Atal Tunnel and Sissu, with kids in mind

Rohtang Pass needs an online permit and the National Green Tribunal caps entry at 1,000 vehicles a day, so on peak dates the family may wait or miss the slot. Plan Day 2 around that. The permit is not included in the package price (it sits in exclusions), and our team arranges it as part of the sightseeing. When Rohtang is closed for snow or the quota is full, there are two easy swaps that keep the day working for a family: Solang Valley for snow-play without the altitude, and the Atal Tunnel through to Sissu, a short, dramatic drive to a small Lahaul village with a waterfall and open meadow that needs no Rohtang permit. Both are gentler on small children and elderly parents than the pass itself. Tell your trip coordinator which way you want to lean and the day is rebuilt around it.

Best time to visit Manali with family

There is no single best month, it depends on what the family wants. For snow and snow activities, December to January is the window, when Manali, Solang and the Atal Tunnel area hold fresh snow and kids get the winter they came for. For pleasant weather, open passes and the hot springs without the cold, March to June is the easier season, and it is when Rohtang typically reopens. The monsoon months bring landslide risk on the highway, so if you are travelling with elderly parents the shoulder months are the safer bet. For a fuller month-by-month view, see the Himachal travel guide.

Why this trip works for kids and elderly parents

This is the part that separates a Manali family plan from a couples or backpacker one. The base stays at one hotel for all 3 nights, so there is no packing and re-packing with children. The altitude is managed: you sleep in Manali at a comfortable height and only go high on Day 2, with Solang and the Atal Tunnel as lower-altitude swaps if the pass is too much for the youngest or oldest in the group. The heavy travel is overnight on the Volvo, which means the daytime is spent in the hills, not on the highway. And the three sightseeing days are paced with slack in them: a temple and a market on Day 1, one big day out on Day 2, a heritage half-day on Day 3. Woollens for the children, steady altitude pacing and a flexible Day 2 are the three things that make a Manali trip genuinely easy with a mixed-age family.

      FAQs About Himachal Tour Packages

Is this package good value compared with other Himachal family tours?

At Rs 8,500 per person on twin sharing it is a budget-value Manali family plan, well below the higher-end Himachal family packages. It covers the overnight Volvo both ways, 3 nights of stay with breakfast and dinner, and the core Manali sightseeing, with every day open to customisation. See more options on our Himachal family packages page linked below.

How do we reach Manali from Delhi for a 3 nights 4 days trip, Volvo or private cab?

This package uses the overnight Volvo both ways, which most families prefer because no one has to drive the 570 km mountain road. The bus leaves the Delhi Volvo point at 5:30 pm and reaches Manali around 7:00 am, so you sleep through the journey. If you have very young children or elderly parents who need frequent breaks, a private cab can be arranged as an add-on for door-to-door flexibility.

Do we need a Rohtang Pass permit, and what if Rohtang is closed?

Yes. Rohtang needs an online permit and the National Green Tribunal caps entry at 1,000 vehicles a day, so peak dates can fill up. The permit is not in the base price; our team arranges it as part of sightseeing. If Rohtang is closed for snow or full, we swap in Solang Valley for snow-play or the Atal Tunnel to Sissu, both of which need no Rohtang permit.

Is a 3 nights 4 days Manali trip enough and suitable for kids and elderly parents?

Yes. The plan keeps one hotel base in Manali for all 3 nights, does the long travel overnight on the Volvo, and only goes to high altitude on Day 2, with lower-altitude Solang and Atal Tunnel swaps if the pass is too much for the youngest or oldest travellers. The days are paced with rest built in, which is what makes it work for a mixed-age family.

Can we swap Rohtang for Atal Tunnel, Sissu or Solang if travelling with small children?

Yes, and many families do. Solang Valley gives kids snow-play, a ropeway and zorbing without the altitude of Rohtang, and the Atal Tunnel through to Sissu is a short, gentle drive to a Lahaul village with a waterfall and meadow. Tell your trip coordinator and Day 2 is rebuilt around whichever you prefer.

What is the best time to visit Manali with family?

For snow and snow activities, go December to January. For pleasant weather, open passes and the hot springs, March to June is easier. Avoid peak monsoon if you are travelling with elderly parents, as the highway carries landslide risk in those months.

Can we experience snowfall in Manali on this trip?

You can experience fresh snowfall in Manali from roughly October to February, which is also a lovely time for the snow-laden mountain views. In the warmer months snow stays higher up, on Rohtang, Solang Valley and around the Atal Tunnel, which is where Day 2 takes you.

Can we upgrade or change the hotels in this itinerary?

Yes. The package is fully customisable, including the hotels. Tell the tour coordinator your preference while booking and the stay is adjusted; a hotel upgrade may change the per-person price.

What are the famous things to buy in Manali?

Kullu shawls and caps, woollen clothing and wooden handicrafts are the classic buys. For food, local apples, pickles and trout fish are worth trying. Day 4 leaves a shopping window in the morning before the Volvo back to Delhi.

What should we pack for a family trip to Rohtang Pass?

Carry good hiking or grip shoes, adequate warm clothing for every family member including children, plus eatables and packaged drinking water. Rohtang and Solang stay cold even in summer, so woollens go in the bag whatever the month.

Driver Provided by the Countryside Travels was very worst and dangerous person. Here i am sharing you the drivers details because further no one should go through the mental trauma which we have gone ( Driver Name: Amandeep Singh, Ph no: 9915947561 Vehicle No PB 01 B 0933). Firstly the driver is a b
ig Lier , he eventually start us to confuse to stay in other places to get commission if we wont listen to him he starts slow driving make us to reach the destination late. Further he avoids the driving saying there were no worth places to visit and starts quarreling and ask for money. On the top of all while return to Delhi threaten that does not enough literally blackmailed us us to stop in the mid of the road if he wont get payment. I was travelling with my husband a child of 3 years. I feel the mental condition of the driver is not well because for small issues he use to scream and blackmail us and also starts shouting loudly on the roads. If i had a facility of sharing a picture i would have shared it because i doest want to face the same situation by others as we travel from far long distances to the hilly area.

Hotel provided at shimla is barowalia resort, which is a pathetic hotel. initially was promised to give Pahuna resort, but later changed. Itenary provided in the list cannot be completed due to not so super planning, only 60% places can be covered.. Driver is a good person and he is a good gentle
man. after so much of complaints got a better hotel in Manali Varsha Inn a very good hotel thanks to Mrs. Sharma, but the itenary in manali should be planned for 2 days, 1 day is not sufficient, this has to be told to the customer, if customer is having budget problems cover only important places. Because of this creating unnecessary rift between customer and driver, luckily not happened in my case. Neelam is very helpful in co-ordinating things, but as an agency lot to improve.
