Overview
A 4 nights 5 days Himachal family package usually means Manali and Shimla. This one adds the piece most family tours skip, a morning at Manikaran Sahib in the Parvati Valley, where the gurudwara cooks its langar in natural hot springs and pilgrims bathe in steaming spring water a few steps from the icy Parvati river. Around that centre you get the family favourites done properly. Hadimba's cedar forest and the Solang Valley ropeway near Manali, the toy-train hills and Kufri's slopes near Shimla, and the option to drive through the Atal Tunnel to the snow at Sissu. It suits mixed-age groups: grandparents who want temples and slow mornings, kids who want snow and cable cars, parents who want one private cab and a fixed plan. Five days, two hill stations, one hot-spring pilgrimage, all on private transport from Chandigarh. If you want to compare other options first, browse our full range of Himachal family packages.
Day-by-day itinerary
Day 1 | Chandigarh to Manali
Your cab meets you in Chandigarh and climbs into the hills along the Beas. The drive runs about 305 km and takes the better part of a day, so it is built to be easy, with stops at Sundernagar Lake and the Pandoh Dam where the river turns a deep green. You reach Manali by evening, check in, and have the night free. If the family still has energy, walk the Mall Road for hot chai, woollens and Kullu shawls, or just sit by the hotel with the mountains in view. Dinner at the hotel is included. This is a settling-in day on purpose. The real sightseeing starts tomorrow, once everyone is rested and used to the altitude.
Meals: dinner. Overnight in Manali.
Day 2 | Manali local sightseeing
After breakfast you do Manali the way families should, slowly. First the Hadimba Devi Temple, a four-tiered wooden shrine built in 1553 inside a deodar forest where the light comes down in shafts and the air smells of cedar. A short walk away is the Manu Temple and the Tibetan monastery with its prayer wheels and thangka workshop. Then Vashisht village, about 3 km from town, for its natural sulphur hot springs, a gentle first taste of the spring-water theme that peaks at Manikaran later in the trip. The afternoon is loose. Old Manali cafes, the riverside walk at Van Vihar, or the Club House for the kids. Every transfer is by private cab, so nobody is waiting on a shared bus.
Meals: breakfast, dinner. Overnight in Manali.
Day 3 | Solang Valley, Atal Tunnel and Sissu
This is the big day for the children. You drive about 13 km up to Solang Valley, the meadow that turns into a snow field in winter and an adventure ground the rest of the year, with a ropeway, zorbing, horse rides, and paragliding for the brave. From here you have a choice most family itineraries do not offer. Carry on through the Atal Tunnel, the 9.02 km tunnel opened in 2020 that burrows under the Rohtang ridge, and come out in Lahaul at Sissu, about 40 km from Manali, where a waterfall drops behind a quiet village and the snow lingers far longer into the year. Families who prefer the classic route can swap this for Rohtang Pass, about 51 km away, which needs a permit and is seasonal. Either way you are back in Manali by evening.
Meals: breakfast, dinner. Overnight in Manali.
Day 4 | Manikaran Sahib, then transfer to Shimla
An early start today, because this is the day that makes the package different. You drive down the valley to Bhuntar and up the Parvati river to Manikaran, about 80 km from Manali, roughly a three-hour road. Manikaran is a rare place, sacred to both Sikhs and Hindus, where boiling hot springs run right beside a freezing glacial river. At the Manikaran Sahib Gurudwara the community langar is cooked in the spring water, and pilgrims soak in the hot-water pools inside the complex. There is the Rama Temple too, and Kasol a few minutes away for a riverside break and lunch. By afternoon the cab turns south for Shimla, a long and scenic transfer through Mandi and the apple country, with a photo stop back at Sundernagar Lake. You reach Shimla by night. It is a full travel day, and the early start is exactly what buys you both Manikaran and Shimla in one trip.
Meals: breakfast, dinner. Overnight in Shimla.
Day 5 | Shimla, Kufri and departure
The last day is Shimla proper. Start at Kufri, about 16 km out, where the Himalayan Nature Park and the open slopes give the kids one more round of yak rides and snow in season. Back in town you walk the colonial spine: Christ Church on the Ridge, built in 1857 and the second oldest church in North India, the old Gaiety Theatre, Scandal Point, and the Viceregal Lodge from 1888 that now houses the Institute of Advanced Study. The energetic can climb to the Jakhoo Temple for its giant Hanuman statue and the view over the deodars. By afternoon the cab starts the drive back to Chandigarh for your onward journey. If your train or flight allows it, time the descent to catch a stretch of the Kalka Shimla toy train, a UNESCO World Heritage narrow-gauge line, on the way down.
Meals: breakfast. Departure from Chandigarh.
Manikaran Sahib and the hot springs, the reason to pick this package
Most 4 nights 5 days family tours of Himachal stop at Manali and Shimla. The reason to book this one is Manikaran. Set deep in the Parvati Valley, it is one of the few places in India where boiling and freezing water sit side by side, the hot springs steaming out of the ground while the Parvati river runs ice-cold alongside. The Manikaran Sahib Gurudwara is the heart of it. Volunteers cook the community langar using the spring water, rice is left in cloth bundles in the hot pools to cook, and anyone is welcome to eat. There are separate hot-water bathing pools for men and women, which many believe ease aches and stiff joints, and grandparents in particular tend to love the soak. Add the Vashisht springs near Manali on Day 2 and the trip quietly becomes a hot-springs circuit as much as a sightseeing tour, a texture the standard Manali to Shimla loop does not have. For families travelling with elders, or with a spiritual streak, this is the day people remember.
How your family reaches the start
Every version of this package runs on a private cab from Chandigarh, which is the practical railhead and airport for the Manali side of Himachal. By road, Chandigarh to Manali is about 305 km and takes roughly eight to nine hours with family stops. From Delhi it is about 530 km, an overnight Volvo or a full day's drive. By air, the nearest airport to Manali is Bhuntar (Kullu-Manali), about 50 km from Manali, though flights are limited and weather-dependent, so most families fly into Chandigarh instead. By train, Chandigarh and Kalka are the closest railheads, and on the Shimla leg you can ride part of the Kalka Shimla toy train. We arrange the cab. You only pick the pickup point.
| Leg | Distance | Approx time | Mode |
|---|---|---|---|

Cancellation and payment
Plans change, especially with kids and elders in the group, so here is how cancellation works on this package. A booking is confirmed with a part payment, and the balance is due before travel. Cancel well ahead of the travel date and you get the largest refund; the refundable share reduces as the date approaches, and cancellations very close to departure carry the highest charge. One free date change is usually allowed on eligible bookings if you give enough notice. Because hotel and transport terms shift by season and by property, your exact refund tiers and cut-off dates are confirmed on your quote before you pay. Ask your trip coordinator to put the cancellation window in writing along with your final itinerary.
What our team knows about this route
"Start Day 4 by six in the morning, not seven. Manikaran plus the Shimla transfer is a long day, and that one hour is the difference between a relaxed langar stop and a rushed one," says our Manali trip coordinator. The prices and inclusions on this page are checked by our Himachal desk against live agent inventory before every booking, not carried over from an old brochure. Reviewed by our Himachal desk lead for route accuracy and seasonality. Booked through TravelTriangle's verified Himachal agent network, backed by 40 lakh plus travellers since 2011.

Himachal Travel FAQs
Is this Himachal itinerary suitable for young kids and elderly parents?
Yes, it is built for mixed-age families. The pace is gentle, all travel is by private cab you can pause any time, and the highlights (Hadimba temple, Solang ropeway, Manikaran gurudwara, Kufri) work for grandparents and children alike. The one long day is Day 4, so we start it early and keep the rest relaxed. Tell us the ages in your group and we adjust the plan.
What makes this package different from a standard Manali and Shimla family tour?
Manikaran. Most 4 nights 5 days family tours only do Manali and Shimla. This one adds the Manikaran Sahib gurudwara and its natural hot springs in the Parvati Valley, plus the option to drive through the Atal Tunnel to the snow at Sissu. It becomes a hot-springs and pilgrimage circuit as much as a sightseeing trip, which families with elders especially value.
How do we reach Manali and Shimla, and is the transport private?
The package starts and ends in Chandigarh, about 305 km from Manali by road. You can fly or train into Chandigarh, and we run the entire trip on a private cab, not a shared bus. From Delhi it is about 530 km by road or overnight Volvo. The nearest airport to Manali itself is Bhuntar, about 50 km away, though it has limited flights.
Can we add Atal Tunnel, Sissu or Rohtang Pass to this package?
Yes. The Atal Tunnel and Sissu snow point are already offered as the Day 3 option after Solang Valley. Rohtang Pass can be swapped in instead; it sits about 51 km from Manali, needs a permit, and is open seasonally. Just tell your coordinator which one you want and we arrange the permit and the extra cab time.
Are meals included, and are vegetarian or Jain options available?
Daily breakfast and dinner at the hotels are included; lunch is on you, which keeps the days flexible. Vegetarian food is the norm across Himachal and easy to arrange, and pure-veg or Jain meals can be requested in advance at most hotels. The langar at Manikaran Sahib is vegetarian and open to everyone.
Is there really snow, and when is the best time for it?
For guaranteed snow, come between December and February, when Solang, the Atal Tunnel road to Sissu, and Kufri are all white. March to June gives green valleys, comfortable weather and lighter crowds, with snow still likely at Rohtang or beyond the tunnel. July to September is the monsoon, greener but with a landslide risk on the higher roads.
What should a family pack for this trip?
Layers, always. Even summer evenings in Manali and Shimla are cold, and the Atal Tunnel and Rohtang side can be near freezing. Bring warm jackets, caps and gloves in winter, comfortable walking shoes, sunscreen for the snow glare, any regular medicines, and a light towel and change of clothes if you plan to use the Manikaran or Vashisht hot springs.
Can we ride the Kalka Shimla toy train on this trip?
You can, on the Shimla leg, if your schedule allows. The Kalka Shimla railway is a UNESCO World Heritage narrow-gauge line and a favourite with children. It is not a fixed inclusion because seats and timings vary, but your coordinator can help you book a stretch of it, usually on the descent toward Chandigarh.
Is Manikaran Sahib open to everyone, and what should we know before visiting?
Yes, the Manikaran Sahib Gurudwara welcomes all visitors regardless of faith. Cover your head, remove shoes before entering, and dress modestly. The hot springs are genuinely hot, so supervise children near the pools. The free langar is served through the day, and it is a warm, humbling stop that most families rate as a highlight of the trip.
What is the cancellation and refund policy?
Bookings are confirmed with a part payment, and cancellations made well before travel get the largest refund, reducing as the date nears. One free date change is usually allowed on eligible bookings with enough notice. Because terms vary by hotel and season, your exact refund windows are confirmed on your written quote before you pay.
